Adif will extend the sideways in the Cobejo and Corrales stations of Buelna, on the Palencia–Santander line of the conventional rail network, with an investment of more than 13 million euros, to favor the operations and maneuvers of the transit of goods through the railway line with origin or destination to the Port of Santander.
The objective of the contract awarded is to undertake the necessary actions to obtain section roads with the capacity to accommodate freight trains of 750 meters in these stations. In Corrales de Buelna, a new section road will be built 1.5 km north of the current railway station, which has three tracks in use.
The project also provides for the extension of the current section of the Cobejo station, in the municipality of Molledo, to 750 meters on the north side. In both cases, the extension requires actions to extend the electrification, as well as adapting the track devices, communications, security facilities and interlocks.
The extension of section routes strengthens the interoperability of the rail network and increases the operability and quality of the rail service, mainly for freight traffic. These works allow a greater traffic capacity and the improvement of the competitiveness of freight services.
In addition to these performances in Cobejo and Corrales de Buelna, in the Palencia–Santander line, seclusion routes have been extended in Muriedas, Mataporquera, Espinosa del Caballero and Osorno. Likewise, Adif has in place the renovation of secondary roads in Las Fraguas, Corrales de Buelna and Bárcena de Pie de Concha, which will increase the operability of the rail freight service.
These actions contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), which has among its goals to develop reliable, sustainable, resilient and quality infrastructures.
