The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has set the new conditions for the use and acquisition of free Renfe subscriptions and state bus lines for the months of May and June. Renfe’s free bimonthly titles can be requested starting this Tuesday, April 8, through the usual channels, while those on the bus lines will be available throughout April.
In particular, it has reduced the minimum number of trips that must be made to eight in order to recover the deposit for free subscriptions for regular travelers. Thus, the deposit will be refunded if the users make 8 trips in total during the two months of validity of each subscription of Proxies, Rodalies, Media Distancia and state-owned bus that they acquire, compared to the current 16.
For its part, the amount of the bonds is maintained as before: between 10 and 65 euros depending on the service.
In the case of the services of Neighbourhoods and Metric Width of Asturias and Cantabria will continue to be free for regular travelers all year round with the same conditions. Thus, the free subscriptions for both hubs are still four months old and the minimum number of trips to be made to recover the deposit is maintained in 16 trips. Thus, from April 8, recurring users from Cantabria and Asturias will be able to purchase the subscription with a validity of four months, until August 31, 2025.
Since the beginning of the year, Renfe has issued in Cantabria about 40,000 subscriptions for the network of Neighbourhoods of metric width and conventional width.
The bonus policies initiated in September 2022 have contributed to increasing the use of public transport and now the Ministry is preparing to start, from July 1, a new phase that will have a greater impact on the modal choice and the frequency and quality of services to continue promoting their use and promoting sustainable and safe mobility.
Not in vain, collective public transport is more sustainable, accessible, safe and efficient than the private vehicle and contributes to avoiding congestion and advancing the decarbonization of the economy and the reduction of emissions. In addition, it is fairer in social terms, more inclusive and has a high positive impact on the economy and industry.
Free subscriptions from Renfe
In the case of Neighbourhoods and Rodalies, a subscription will be marketed with validity from May 1, the date of purchase if this is later, until June 30, 2025. It will be necessary to have a current subscription for each Suburbs, which will be valid for unlimited trips between any origin and destination of the Suburbs. The traveler must pay a deposit of 10 euros, which will be refunded if the recurrence established in 8 trips is reached.
In the case of Media Distancia, the subscriptions will be by origin/destination. The traveler must pay an amount of 20 euros, as a deposit that will be refunded if the recurrence established in 8 trips is reached.
All these discounts are compatible with discounts for large families.
Subscriptions and titles multitravel the VACs
A new multi-trip title will be marketed with a period of validity between May 1 and June 30, 2025. The user must pay an amount per multi-trip title, as a deposit, which will be refunded if the recurrence established in 8 trips is reached.
The multi-trip title deposit is established for each regular public transport service route depending on the traveller’s journey and ticket price, according to the following classification:
· 20 euros deposit on trips with ticket price up to 5,00 euros
· 35 euros of bail on trips with ticket price between 5,01 and 13,00 euros
· 50 euros of bail on trips with ticket price between 13.01 and 25.00 euros
· 65 euros of bail for journeys with ticket price higher than 25.00 euros
These subscriptions are also compatible with discounts for large families.
Future measures
The future system, which will enter into force on July 1st, 2025, envisages creating a single Commuter ticket for all areas and towns of Spain for 20 euros per month, the free use of all public collective transport for children under 15 years of age, special discounts for young people, lower fares for other recurring users and new aids to promote the use of the bicycle as a means of daily transport.
With regard to the single Renfe ticket or pass for Neighbourhoods, which can be used for all areas of each nucleus and in the rest of the nuclei of Neighbourhoods throughout Spain, three modalities are enabled depending on age:
· A single rate nominative monthly pass 20 euros
· A nominative monthly subscription of a single rate of 10 euros, for young people between 15 and 26 years old, both included.
· A free annual nominative pass for children (under 15 years of age).
Conventional mid-distance subscriptions will have discounts of 40% and will be free for children. For young people between 15 and 26 years old, the rebate rises to 50%.
State-owned bus services will have discounts of between 40 and 70% depending on the age and type of subscription purchased.
With regard to urban and metropolitan transport of regional and local ownership, the Ministry will finance its gratuitousness for children under 15 years of age and a 50% discount for young subscribers. The rest of the titles, except the tourist ones, the simple ones and the round trip ones, a discount of at least 40% is promoted, which must be cofinanced to 20%.
In turn, within the framework of this Royal Decree-Law we are working on a series of aids to increase the offer and improve the quality of public transport, with new lines or more frequencies, and facilitate the purchase of electric bicycles to individuals and delivery companies.
Royal Decree-Law 1/2025, of 28 January, provides in article 63, paragraph 2, to restore the validity of the aid provided for in articles 71 and 72 of Royal Decree-Law 8/2023, of 27 December. In addition, the provision provides that the conditions for the recurrence and use of multi-travel certificates during the last two months of this extension will be established by Resolution of the Secretary of State and Sustainable Mobility
