Zaragoza - The Directorate General of Traffic is developing a new intensive surveillance campaign this week focused on compliance with speed limits, as one of the key risk factors in road accidents. In one of the controls, the government delegate in Aragón, Fernando Beltrán, the provincial head of Traffic, José Antonio Mérida, and the colonel head of the Traffic Sector of Aragón, José Luis Díaz, were present this morning.
According to DGT data, inadequate speed is the third most common concurrent factor in traffic accidents, especially those with fatalities. In Aragon, inadequate or excessive speed was a factor in 14% of fatal accidents. Thus, until Sunday, April 19, the Traffic Agents of the Civil Guard, as well as those of the other local police who have joined, will especially control risk sections where there is a high accident rate.
All this following the recommendations of international and European organizations and agencies responsible for road safety in the different countries to monitor that the established speed limits are met. The Spanish Road Safety Strategy 2030 identifies as a strategic area “zero tolerance for high-risk behaviours” in line with the approach of the integrated insurance system and in accordance with the parameters of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, which addresses the need for surveillance and control activities to reduce the impact of high-risk behaviours. Therefore, this campaign is essential to contribute to reducing the attitudes of users that involve behaviors that put their lives at risk, and the lives of other users.
As this is a campaign also developed at European level by the association RoadPol (European Roads Policing Network), surveillance will be carried out not only in Spain but in all the countries that belong to that association.
SPEED CONTROL POINTS
In addition to these periodic campaigns, the General Directorate of Traffic uses other speed control tools such as fixed radars, section radars, mobile radars or air control from the Agency’s helicopters, with the aim of reducing the number not only of fatal accidents but also of hospitalized injuries, since it has been shown that speed not only affects the risk of being involved in a traffic accident but also that, the faster it will be more difficult to react in time to prevent the accident and the more serious will be the injuries caused as a result of it.
TECHNOLOGY AS AN ALLY
Since July 6, 2024, all new registered vehicles must have a series of advanced safety features, the so-called ADAS, among which is the Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA).
This system, made up of the vehicle’s navigator, which shows the speed limit on the road on which it travels, and a signal recognition system that complements digital cartography and detects temporary speed limitations, helps the driver to know and respect the speed limits, thus contributing to the improvement of road safety.
RESULTS LAST CAMPAIGN
In the last campaign held in August 2025, agents of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard of the Sector of Aragon controlled more than 34,000 vehicles and 1,422 complaints were filed.
