The Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, pointed out, during an appearance in the Constitutional Commission of the Congress of Deputies, that there are already 4,500 bodies recovered from victims of the Civil War and Franco’s regime, thanks to the Four-Year Exhumation Plan developed by the Ministry.
With the implementation of this plan, around 600 actions have been carried out throughout the Spanish territory. In addition, more than 15 million euros have been mobilized, through transfers, mainly to autonomous communities (57%) and local entities (37%).
The minister listed the different lines of action that are being carried out, always under the compass of Law 20/2022, of October 19, of Democratic Memory, and wanted to emphasize that he will not pass before those who do not conform to the norm. “Some administrations are repealing autonomous Memory laws. This is a step backwards in the democratic strengthening of the country, a step that will weigh on the conscience of those who have embarked on that path,” he said, and said that it will be “firm” with those who do not develop the Law or want to reinterpret it with “relativist or negationist” postulates.
