The Minister of Territorial Policy and Spokeswoman for the Government, Isabel Rodríguez, has highlighted the service provided by the media and information professionals in the expansion of the democratic space and the formation of citizens: “I am convinced that the necessary efforts must be made to protect the right to information. It is the main reason that moves us to regulate professional secrecy by law, because we believe in the social function of journalism, because the right to information is one of the main constitutional rights and because we are convinced of the need to reinforce truthful information.”
The minister has announced the regulation by Organic Law of Professional Secrecy, which will include the right not to reveal the identity of the source, as well as any other information that could lead directly or indirectly to its identification. “No journalist will be persecuted for protecting the identity of his sources.”
Isabel Rodríguez, who has closed the Conference “Professional Secrecy, pending subject”, organized by the Federation of Associations of Journalists of Spain (FAPE), has thanked the involvement, contributions and shared work with different organizations “with which we have agreed the normative development of professional secrecy”, FAPE, the journalism federations of UGT and CCOO and the Federation of Journalists’ Unions.
