The final decision on the location of the Thirty Metre Telescope (TMT) in La Palma now depends exclusively on its international consortium, after the public administrations have completed their part. The Commissioner has very positively valued this impulse since La Palma has exceptional conditions for astronomical observation and the Canary Islands has experience, potential and exceptional location, as well as contributing notoriously to the reconstruction of the island, which bets on strategic projects of long impact that collaborate to establish a stable economic model in which science implies a significant percentage of development.
Firm commitment to the implementation of the TMT in La Palma

The Special Commissioner for the Reconstruction of La Palma, Héctor Izquierdo, has welcomed the fact that the Government of Spain and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have designed a financial framework that will manage to install at the summits of La Palma the future Thirty Metre Telescope (TMT) at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. The proposal would mobilise up to €1 billion to house the largest optical and infrared telescope in the northern hemisphere.
