The choice of La Palma as the venue for this fifth edition responds to the experience accumulated by the island after the volcanic eruption of 2021 and the reconstruction process that continues to develop since then. The meeting brings together specialists, researchers, cultural managers, public officials and representatives from different territories affected by natural disasters to share experiences and generate proposals that contribute to strengthening the resilience of communities through culture.
During the inauguration, in addition to the Commissioner, the Director-General of Cultural Heritage and Fine Arts, Ángeles Albert, and the Director-General of Cultural Rights, Jazmín Beiraq, the President of the Island Council, Sergio Rodríguez and the Vice-Minister of Culture and Heritage of the Government of the Canary Islands, Horacio Umpié rrez.Los, have spoken. Institutional representatives agree that La Palma should become a meeting and learning space for other territories affected by natural phenomena that require a long process of reconstruction.
“Reconstruction is not limited to recovering infrastructures or economic activity; it also involves protecting the memory, heritage and community ties that give meaning to a territory,” said Izquierdo, emphasizing that La Palma has much to contribute to this debate from the experience lived and from the work that has been developed together with all the administrations involved and the palm tree society.
After the institutional welcome, the work program of ‘Territory Experiences V’ has been presented, which addresses issues related to memory, heritage, community participation and the integration of the cultural dimension in emergency management and reconstruction strategies. The organization includes working sessions, presentations of experiences, activities open to the public and the celebration of the ‘II Day of Good Practices in Intangible Cultural Heritage’.
