Fosa de El Fitu/La Trabajo, Parres/Gijón
The Secretary of State for Democratic Memory, Fernando Martínez, traveled today to Asturias, where he paid a visit to the El Fitu trench, in the town of Parres. During the visit he was accompanied by the Counselor of the Presidency of the Principality of Asturias, Rita Camblor and the Director General of Emigration and Democratic Memory, Begoña Serrano.
Fernando Martínez has been interested in the work that is being done in this grave, in which people victims of Franco’s repression were buried. The number of people who could be buried in this grave is not known, although for the time being it has been possible to find out the identity of 15 of them.
After the visit, the Secretary of State has traveled to Gijón. There he held a meeting in the Labour Office with the Presidential Adviser of the Principality of Asturias in which they talked about the joint projects that can be carried out by the Secretary of State and the Government of Asturias in the field of Democratic Memory. Among these projects are the pit map or the national DNA bank, which will help identify exhumated people.
The trip of the Secretary of State ended with a meeting with organizations of historical memory, to which he explained the content of the Preliminary Draft Law of Democratic Memory approved by the Council of Ministers. At the meeting, which was held in the Government Delegation, Fernando Martínez explained the most important aspects of the Preliminary Draft Law on Democratic Memory and told them about the call for grants for activities related to the recovery of Democratic Memory and the victims of the Civil War and dictatorship.
This year, this aid totals 750,000 euros, of which 60% is used to finance activities related to the exhumation of people buried in graves. The remaining grants are intended for studies and research relating to the restoration of democratic memory, as well as for the moral recognition of victims of the Civil War and the dictatorship; publications, courses and actions of a scientific and/or informative nature on democratic memory and activities for the collection, conservation, study and dissemination of the documentary or intellectual heritage of the Civil War and of the Dictatorship.
