"Keeping the exiles of Spain alive in our hearts." The meeting wants to offer a tribute to the protagonists of La Retiro, the exodus of almost half a thousand people at the end of the Spanish Civil War, and recognize their contribution to the progress, development and modernization of the host countries.

The Mckeldin Library hosts, throughout Wednesday 23, different presentations on Spanish Republicans in the United States. Round table "Studies of Exile in UMD: from Zenobia Camprubí and Juan Ramón Jiménez to the present" with Cecilia Battauz, Daniela Bulansky, Nélida Devesa and Sofía Maurette, and different lectures given by Anne Giller-Wilde "Remembering the Spain of pre-exile: Juan Ramón Jiménez, MacKinlay Kantor and 1956", Kathryn Taylor "Memory and resistance in the writings of exile of María Teresa León", and Rachel Linville "From Max Aub to El Mazuco: the Spanish exile and its legacy", among others. Videoconference with professor emeritus Noam Chomsky "From 1930 and beyond", and screening of the film "Refuge", by Jean-Paul Le Chanois.

The symposium, on its second day, is held at St. Mary's The Language House and proposes, among other dissertations, "The State of Maryland and Spanish Exile. The case of Pedro Salinas", "Basque Republican Exile" and "Spanish Republican Exile and Art".

The meeting ends with the musical performance "Itineraries. From exile to inner voice" with the soprano Anaïs Naharro-Murphy and the pianist Moisés Ruiz de Gauna in the interpretation, and texts of Alberti, García Lorca, Salinas and Cernuda. In the words of the coordinator of this closing act, Carlos José Martínez, "Poetry, a weapon loaded with present, brings us as no other creation closer to the root itself, to that inner voice that shakes the vital foundations until the first and final meaning of our work is shattered. Those who went into exile, left not a perishable scar, but an exercise in unbreakable freedom and the perfect excuse to walk first the paths through which to travel for the sake of modernity understood as proclaims."

The symposium has the collaboration of the Interministerial Commission of the 80th anniversary of the Spanish republican exile.
