Cemetery of Père Lachaise, Paris (France)
The Père Lachaise cemetery hosts the first of the events of the 80th anniversary of the Retreat. Throughout this year, the Paris City Council and the Association of 24 August 1944 organized a series of cultural events in memory of the republican exiles. At the end of the Civil War, more than 475,000 people crossed the French border through different points of the territory - Cerbère, Perthus, Prats de Mollo or Bourg Madame - reaching France in absolute misery. In the words of the Director General for Historical Memory, Fernando Martínez, who was accompanied by the Undersecretary of Justice, Cristina Latorre, this commemoration supposes "to rescue from oblivion the Spanish republican exile. We must take their history to the schools because those men and women represented the best Spain. Because of their democratic values and republican virtues they were deported to Nazi camps and in France they continued to fight against fascism in the resistance."
