The delegate of the Government of Spain in the Basque Country, Marisol Garmendia, opened this morning the I Day of LGTBIQ+ Families that is celebrated today and tomorrow in Bilbao. Garmendia has welcomed the attendees at the La Bolsa Building to the event organized by Sehaska (Association of LGTBI Families of the Basque Country).
“This is an act that symbolizes advancement, diversity and equality in our society. I like this I Day of LGTBG+ Families, in which we celebrate love in all its forms. We celebrate the right of every person to create a family, the right of every family to exist, to be recognized and to live in dignity. Because a just society is one that welcomes and protects all its citizens, without discrimination or prejudice.”
Garmendia has highlighted the Government’s commitment to the values that these groups embody and the progress made in this regard. “I like to be the first woman delegate of the Government of Spain in the Basque Country and represent here today a progressive government that defends plurality, diversity and the conquest and expansion of rights for all people. With President Zapatero and now with Pedro Sánchez, the legislation approved on civil rights has been a crucial step to protect and make visible those who, for too long, have been silenced or marginalized,” he said.
The path to equality is in progress, although “there is still a way to go to eradicate discrimination, combat hate speech and educate in diversity from childhood. The reactionary and populist positions of the right and the far right try to make their way in all areas, and also in their attempt to oppose and deny sexual diversity,” denounced the delegate of the Government.
The objective is clear and, as Garmendia has ratified, “today we reaffirm our commitment to you and to you. The institutions are here to protect, support and promote policies that guarantee a future where no one has to hide or justify themselves for being who they are or loving who they love. Let us continue to work together and together, building bridges and breaking down barriers. Let us continue to move towards a more inclusive Basque Country, where each family is valued and recognized for what it really is: a nucleus of love, support and rights.”
