Seven cinemas of the Foral Community have joined the program “Cine Sénior” which, for the second year, has been launched by the Ministry of Culture. These are the Multicines Los Llanos de Estella/Lizarra; the Golem Bayona and Yamaguchi de Pamplona/Iruña; the Golem La Morea in Cordovilla; Yelmo Cines Itaroa de Huarte/Uharte; Ocine de Tudela; and the Multicines Las Cañas de Viana. A total of 420 exhibition spaces have been added to this initiative throughout Spain.
The program, which is already underway, allows people aged 65 and over to go to the cinema on Tuesdays at a reduced price of 2 euros. As a novelty regarding the first edition, tickets can be purchased both at the ticket offices of the exhibition rooms, and by electronic means.
The continuity of the measure responds to the good results of the first edition, as well as to the determination of the Ministry of Culture to guarantee the activity of the exhibition halls as fundamental agents of the dissemination of cultural diversity through the recovery of attendance to the halls of people of this age group.
The maximum allocation to finance these grants in 2024 amounts to 12 million euros, 20% more than in the first call for proposals. Of this amount, a maximum of EUR 10 million corresponds to the granting of the aid to the beneficiaries, while a maximum of EUR 1.75 million will be reserved to meet the possible needs for an increase in the aid granted as a result of a greater execution than expected.
According to data from the Federation of Spanish Cinemas, FECE, during the last campaign, Tuesday was the day of the week in which the general attendance at the cinema was most increased. In particular, it grew by around 50% compared to Tuesdays in the same period of the previous year: from 2.7 million total viewers on Tuesdays in 2022, it increased to 4 million total viewers on Tuesdays in 2023. During the program’s campaign, which took place between July and December, the attendance of a total of 924,724 senior viewers was recorded, 25.5% of the total tickets sold.
