The Ministry of Culture and Sport presents in Viana (Navarre) PALABRAS -Camino, a project aimed at young people residing in localities of the Camino de Santiago, located in the autonomous communities of the Jacobean Council, whose protagonists are music and speech.
Its objectives are:
1. To approach the reality of the young people who live in the localities that are part of the Camino de Santiago.
2. Encourage the participation of these young people in the social and cultural life of the Camino.
3. To awaken among this group the interest for the Camino.
The idea is to achieve this by involving young people who live in this environment and participate in the sociocultural dynamics of the Jacobean route. A space will be created so that they and they can express themselves freely, in which they are protagonists and in which they are actively involved. This can also serve to make them more present in the context of the Camino and it is encouraged to do so by becoming pilgrims.
The backbone of this project will be the word, in the form of spoken word, story, poetry, rap lyrics, thought or reflection, etc., and music, which will be expressed mainly through urban rhythms, but also through other current styles, traditional sounds and folklore, soundscapes and experimentation based on the remix and fusion of styles, among other elements. The mixing in the same recipe of ingredients as varied as rap, traditional forms of orality, literature, rhyme, vindication, etc., can be a good way to link with the concerns and daily life of young people living in the environment of the Camino, and for them to express their emotions and develop their creativity.
The first phase of the project begins: ‘Heating engines’
In this first phase, which will take place in May 2023, a series of itinerant and interactive activities will be organized organized by the Ministry of Culture and Sport (Secretariat of the Jacobean Council), in collaboration with the autonomous community of the Principality of Asturias, the autonomous communities of Galicia and Aragón, the Foral Community of Navarra, and the municipalities of Las Regueras, Mondoñedo, Viana and Castiello de Jaca, in whose populations the activities are carried out.
The activities of Viana will take place on May 19th and 20th, and its objective will be to publicize the PALABRAS -Camino project among the potential participants of the same, gradually involving them throughout the process, trying to attract their attention, and working on different aspects related to the main elements of the initiative, the word and the music. The activities will be carried out by the Boy-Tropic Collective, which will carry out the activities at La C.O.S.A. (Organized Travelling Sound Center), a caravan with installation of a sound studio.
The activity to be developed during the first day will be entitled Camino Sonoro. Camino poema, in which, following the theme of “the paths of life”, the participants will work with the sounds of each locality, and in dynamics of creation with the word (poetry and story), as well as sound experimentation on board La C.O.S.A., in which all the actions carried out in this activity will be recorded. From all this process he will produce a podcast.
On the second day, the activity Camino song will take place, a workshop in which participants will create a collective song based on the sound materials recorded the previous day, fragments of traditional music from each population and the recording of instruments made in La C.O.S.A. A song will be created by locality, which will be part of a four-song EP that will be released online on the main music platforms at the end of the process.
In the second phase of the project, the PALABRAS ound contest will be held, in which young people will be able to develop their creativity by performing a musical composition.
