May 15, 2025. The delegate of the Government has inaugurated this morning the works of conservation and adaptation of access to the batteries of Cabo Tiñoso, in Cartagena, which includes those of the Atalayón, Castillitos and Jorel, in which the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge has invested 658,000 euros.
“In recent years, several episodes of heavy rainfall have caused the pavement of the access road to deteriorate as a direct result of the incorrect drainage of part of the ditch sections and the detachment of rocks and material from the slopes,” explained Mariola Guevara.
The Government delegate, who has been accompanied by the head of the State Coast Demarcation, Daniel Caballero, has detailed that, in order to improve access to the Cabo Tiñoso estate, the State agency has carried out a new paving of the entire route, in its 7 kilometers in length, through regrowth with a rolling layer of 5 cm in thickness. “In addition, we have improved the parking areas by means of stone pavement on the esplanade located at the end of the road,” he added.
The Cabo Tiñoso estate, next to the road that gives it access, was acquired by the General Directorate of Coasts in 2006 in order to provide it with the protection regime that the Law of Coasts gives to the public domain of land and sea, thus guaranteeing the conservation of this natural heritage against denaturation processes that have been affecting a large part of our coastline.
“I would like to highlight the Ministry’s commitment to the protection of our environmental, landscape and cultural values in an area like this, especially attractive to the public to enjoy active and sustainable tourism in which the protagonist is physical activity in the natural environment, combining it in a unique way with the historical and cultural values of coastal batteries,” said Guevara.
For his part, Daniel Caballero has detailed that the works have been designed according to the protection criteria of the Sierra de la Muela, Cabo Tiñoso and Roldán Natural Space in which it is framed, and includes the following actions:
- PRIOR OPERATIONS to prepare an inventory of flora and environmental monitoring of the work, marking and marking of plant specimens to be protected, protection of collection areas and parking lot
of machinery.
- CLEANING OF MARGINS and road ditches, clearances, manual pruning of protected species, slope conditioning and installation of wooden barrage for protection against detachments.
- IMPROVEMENT OF PARKING AREAS by means of stone pavement in the esplanade located at the end of the road, previous levelling, extended and compaction of zahors. Additional elements have been implemented in all parking areas located along the road to improve the functionality and security of the parking area, including signs and beehives, as well as turning logs to delimit the different parking spaces, facilitating the organization and efficient use of the available space in the parking.
All these actions have been completed with road safety improvements using reflective road markings and vertical signage on wooden poles. Likewise, the information posters will be replaced and the installation of several sections of ecological security barrier built in wood will be carried out.
