- The initiative is part of a generic surveillance campaign that runs until May 12
- 56% of the active vehicle fleet in the Region of Murcia is more than 15 years old.
May 7, 2024. A mobile ITV will carry out over the next two weeks around eighty technical inspections of commercial vehicles on the roads of the Region of Murcia. If it is favorable, this roaming inspection does not involve the renewal of the ITV’s expiration date, and, otherwise, the owner will have 15 days to correct the deficiencies detected and go to an ITV station with the repairs carried out.
This action coincides with a generic campaign of surveillance and control of the technical conditions of vehicles that takes place in parallel on interurban roads in the Region of Murcia until May 12 and in which the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard plans to control more than 10,000 vehicles.
“The Spanish Road Safety Strategy 2030 identifies safe and connected vehicles as a strategic area, to which it pays special attention to reduce road accidents. In this sense, it expresses that the age of the vehicle is related to its level of safety, and the risk of dying or being injured hospitalized increases with the age of the vehicle,” explained Virginia Jerez, Provincial Traffic Chief, during the presentation of the campaign.
Jerez has indicated that 56% of the total active vehicle fleet in the Region of Murcia is more than 15 years old, and that, if we compare its age with the fatal accident on interurban roads in 2023, of the total of forty people who died on this type of roads, fifteen were users of passenger cars, eleven of motorcycles, five of trucks, one of vans and one of a light quad. The remaining seven were pedestrians.
In addition, in 2023, in 7% of the accidents involving victims that occurred on interurban roads, the vehicles had expired VTI (47 out of 668), and in 3% of the cases the concurrent factor was the condition of the vehicle (22 out of 668).
Therefore, the surveillance and control of the technical conditions of the vehicles, not only during the special surveillance and control campaigns programmed annually by the DGT, but as part of the usual surveillance and control activity of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard, is essential, since, both in 2023 and in 2024, 18.5% of the complaints filed in our province on interurban roads were for infractions related to the non-compliance of the ITV.
In the last campaign of this type, the Traffic sector of the Civil Guard controlled a total of 10,119 vehicles on interurban roads, resulting in 579 vehicles reported, which represents 5.72% of the total, and filed 670 complaints.
The most detected violation in this campaign corresponds to the concept of ITV with 396 complaints out of 670 filed, which represents 59% of the total number of complaints filed. It is very important to remember that proper maintenance of the vehicle is essential to ensure safety in our travels.
Accidents with victims and injuries in interurban roads
So far this year, and in relation to 2023, there have been 5% more accidents with victims, although the number of people killed has decreased by 6%, and the number of people seriously injured has increased by 14%.
