December 11, 2023. The government delegate has presented today a new special campaign of control and surveillance of alcohol and drugs that will be developed from today and until next December 17 on the roads of the Region of Murcia
Francisco Jiménez has indicated that, during these days, about 200 agents of the Traffic Group of the Civil Traffic Guard will control around 5,000 vehicles in a campaign that he has defined as “very timely and pertinent” given the high percentage of alcohol and drugs presence in deceased drivers on our roads.
“This year, among the total of 47 deaths recorded on our roads, there were 31 drivers, twenty-six of whom were analyzed by the Institute of Legal Medicine, which found traces of alcohol or drugs in fifteen of them, that is, in 58% of the total number of deceased drivers analyzed,” said Jiménez during the presentation, which took place on the RM-554 road in Archena and in which he has been accompanied by the Provincial Traffic Chief, Virginia Jerez, and the commander of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard, Francisco Javier Utrabo.
In relation to 2022, 53 people died in 48 fatal traffic accidents in our Region. In these sinister roads, of the 30 drivers involved, 28 were analyzed by the Institute of Legal Medicine of Murcia (IML), with the result of 17 positive drivers in the alcohol or drug control test, that is, 61%.
The government delegate has detailed that so far in 2023, 144,689 preventive alcohol controls have already been carried out in the Region of Murcia, with the result of 2,186 positives, which represents 1.51% of the total, and 3,009 drug tests, which ended with 1,432 positives, 47.59% of the total.
As for pedestrians, ten were those who died in 2022 in the Region of Murcia. Nine of them were given toxicological tests by the IML, and four were positive in alcohol or drug consumption, which represents 44%.
Broken down by type of road, 57% of the pedestrians who died on interurban roads analyzed by the IML had consumed alcohol or drugs (4 out of 7).
On the urban road there are no deceased pedestrians with a positive result.
