- The 13th of January marks two centuries since the creation of the General Police of the Kingdom in 1824
- “Their longevity, survival, training, prestige, ability to innovate, grow and adapt in every time and circumstance has been made on the basis of the sacrifice of thousands of men and women committed for a cause and for a country,” said Jiménez
October 11, 2023. “Today we are exactly 94 days away for January 13, 2024, the date on which the National Police will solemnly become a bicentennial institution,” said the government delegate during his speech at the celebration ceremony of the Holy Guardian Angels, skippers of the body, who presided this morning together with the Superior Chief of Police in the Plaza del Cardenal Belluga in Murcia.
Francisco Jiménez has indicated that this is an achievement within the reach of very few institutions, and among that privileged selection, “the case of the National Police is particularly meritorious, since it implies that its longevity, survival, training, prestige, capacity to innovate, to grow and adapt to the times in each time and circumstance has been made on the basis of the sacrifice of thousands of men and women committed for a cause and for a country that, today, tomorrow, and two hundred years ago, give, give and have given life for that same cause and for that same country,” he said during his speech.
The government delegate has insisted that it is appropriate to give due importance to milestones such as this bicentenary. “An anniversary to celebrate and remember the history of this body, to reinforce the necessary social conscience that sufficiently recognizes, appreciates and values the transcendental contribution of our State Security Forces to the peaceful present in which we operate and in which we exercise our most basic rights and freedoms,” he added.
Jiménez has indicated that this is especially important at the complicated socioeconomic and geopolitical crossroads in which we find ourselves, which he has defined as a time change rather than a time of change.
“In order to guarantee concepts, feelings or ancestral needs of freedom, security and equality, we are faced with a reality and challenges of globalisation and a constantly changing world in which the immediacy with which information circulates and the ease with which a territorial conflict of global repercussions can be triggered has eliminated any traditional concept of time and space”
A daily conquest
Thus, the government delegate has remarked that “everything happens here and now. As here and now the war is happening in Ukraine and the Middle East, conflicts that remind us of our own fragility and that encourage us not to fall into self-complacency, since we dramatically verify that peace, freedom, coexistence, in short, our rights and freedoms, are not infinite and require daily conquest.”
Jiménez reiterated the commitment of the Government of Spain to provide more and better human and material resources to the Police, and recalled that, currently, in the Region of Murcia we have a historical figure of 3,883 Civil Guard and National Police officers, 454 more than in 2017, representing an increase of 13.2%.
During the event, the Government Delegation has imposed the Cross of Officer of the Order of Civil Merit on Commissioner Juan Manuel España Carmona, and the National Police has awarded eleven decorations of the Cross to police merit with white badge to personnel outside the body:
