- Special Operation Summer 2023 begins at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon and ends at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 3
- During this period, there will be three major operations to manage the global device: Departure, August First and Summer Return
- In the summer of 2022, eight deaths were recorded, seven of them on interurban roads
June 30, 2023. About five million trips will record the roads of the Region of Murcia during this summer, according to the Government delegate, Francisco Jiménez, today in the presentation of the special device summer 2023, which begins at 15 hours and will last until 24 hours on September 3, and in which he has been accompanied by Virginia Jerez, Provincial Traffic Chief, and the commander of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard, Francisco Javier Utrabo.
During this period, there will be three major operations, Departure, August First and Summer Return, which will concentrate the bulk of the movements, and a special campaign to control and monitor alcohol and drug consumption that will take place from August 14 to 20.
“This is going to save lives and extreme caution on the roads, especially on a day like today when this special summer operation begins and there is a massive departure of citizens to their vacation places, which will generate 4,700,000 trips throughout the summer, 283,000 in July, and 2,467,000 in August,” said Jiménez.
The Government delegate explained that the global device comprises three major operations, Operation Depart, from 15:00 today to 24:00 on Sunday, July 2, August First, from 15:00 on July 28 to 24:00 on Tuesday, August 1, and Operation Summer Return, from 15:00 on Friday, August 31 to 24:00 on Sunday, September 3.
There will also be a special device in mid-August, which will run between 15 hours on Friday 11 and 24 hours on Tuesday 15 August, in addition to the special devices that will take place every summer weekend.
“It is about putting in place all possible human and logistical measures to guarantee the safety of drivers and reduce accidents on our roads,” he added.
End of use of triangles on highways and highways
The beginning of this Summer 2023 Special Operation coincides with the end of the obligation to use the hazard pre-signalling triangles on motorways and motorways in case of immobilisation of the vehicle due to accident or breakdown. Its use remains mandatory when these circumstances occur in conventional ways, as announced by the government delegate.
“From now on, if we encounter an accident or breakdown on the motorway or motorway, we put on the vest, activate the emergency lights and as far as possible we place ourselves behind the protective barrier, because in this type of roads, the less we roam through them, the safer it will be for all the occupants of the vehicle,” explained the Provincial Traffic Chief.
The DGT has published an instruction containing this exception, motivated mainly by the following issues:
• The high number of deaths on high-capacity roads (highways and highways) in recent years. The average number of pedestrians
• Twenty-two people lost their lives after getting out of the vehicle in the last five years.
• For the traffic conditions that occur on highways and highways in which there is a high traffic intensity and high speed.
• Because accident data on these types of roads where a traffic jam has occurred and where an immobilised vehicle existed show that passing through the roadside, remaining on the roadside, trying to repair a fault or even, the placement and subsequent removal of the hazard pre-signalling triangles significantly increase the risk of traffic jam.
• There are already countries like the United Kingdom that have also eliminated its use on fast tracks and other countries are studying it.
• Taking into account all these reasons, and bearing in mind that the placement of the pre-warning danger triangles is not feasible on motorways and motorways because it seriously compromises the safety of people, having to walk along the road, its placement is exempt and therefore will not be a reason for denunciation exclusively on these fast tracks.
• The instruction published today will be null and void on January 1, 2026, when it will be mandatory for all drivers to carry the V16 signal in the vehicle, which will put the definitive end to the danger pre-signage triangles.
Accident Summer 2022
During the special operation last summer, seven fatalities were recorded in traffic accidents on interurban roads, four deaths in July and three in August, and twenty-four people were seriously injured in accidents on the same type of road. On urban roads, a mortal victim was recorded in the month of August.
Of the eight deaths in the summer of 2023, four were vulnerable users, three motorcycle drivers and one pedestrian.

STEPPING OPERATION
The Provincial Traffic Headquarters reports on the 41st Operation Passage of the Strait, which will take place from June 15 to September 15. During this period, a significant increase in foreign-registered vehicles is expected on the roads, especially those that travel to third countries, as European citizens who make stays of origin in Africa. It is estimated that more than 700,000 vehicles will pass through our roads as part of this operation.
During the Strait Pass operation of 2022, at the national level, a total of eight hospitalized injuries and one fatal victim were estimated in the accidents that occurred. The General Directorate of Traffic emphasizes the main causes of accidents identified: lack of attention or drowsiness, excessive speed, unregulated travel and non-respect of safety distance.
