- May 22, 2023. The delegate of the Government, Caridad Rives, and the Superior Chief of Police, Ignacio Del Olmo, delivered this morning to the Food Bank of Segura six tons of coffee seized in a recent anti-drug operation of the National Police.
Caridad Rives has indicated that the six British citizens arrested were hiding 137 kilos of marijuana between the coffee boxes that they wanted to get to Holland and that they would have a value of approximately 2.5 million euros in the market.
“The constant and discreet work of the National Police produces brilliant results like those of this operation, which also gives us the satisfaction of being able to deliver for distribution among the most disadvantaged six tons of coffee, a product that, due to its high price, is not among the basic foods that the Food Bank can distribute,” explained Rives.
Del Olmo has highlighted the value of international cooperation with the British authorities of the NCA that has allowed the dismantling of this organization, although investigations remain open, both in Spain and Great Britain, as explained by the Superior Chief.
“The origin of marijuana was Colombia, and that is why it was hidden among the coffee, which offered them the advantage of using its smell to make the work of the detection dogs difficult, in addition to the facilities offered by this product when declaring the freight so that they do not get into problems when exporting it to Europe,” he added.
Food Aid Plan
The Food Bank is one of the Associated Distribution Organizations of the Food Aid Plan of the Government of Spain, whose first phase contemplates in the Region of Murcia the distribution of 549,965.52 kilos of food valued at 910,458.42 euros.
The designated Partner Distribution Organizations (Spanish Federation of Food Banks and Spanish Red Cross), through their two storage and distribution centers (CAD), will distribute the food they receive from the Spanish Food Guarantee Fund to 174 partner distribution organizations (OAR) that, in turn, serve 48,883 people in need in a situation of social and/or economic dependency in the Region of Murcia.
