March 23, 2023. The Government delegate presided over today the commemoration of the World Meteorological Day, held at the Museum of Science and Water of Murcia, where he announced that the Government of Spain has invested 1.5 million euros in the installation of the new meteorological radar equipment of AEMET in the Region of Murcia, whose works will culminate during the next year after having invested an additional 430,000 euros for the adaptation and renovation of the existing infrastructures.
José Vélez has highlighted the effort and commitment of the Government of Spain in the fight against climate change, channeled through initiatives such as the Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition, in force since May 2021, whose objectives include compliance with the Paris Agreement and promoting adaptation to the impacts of climate change and the implementation of a sustainable development model.
Vélez has also cited the second National Climate Change Adaptation Plan (2021-2030), approved at the Council of Ministers on January 21, 2020, in which the Government Declaration on the Climate and Environmental Emergency was established.
Evidence of climate change in the Region of Murcia
“Climate change is not going to come, climate change is already here, and the evidence of such change is a tangible reality throughout the planet. In the Region of Murcia it is as evident as the increase in the regional average temperature of more than one tenth of a degree each decade, the advance and lengthening of climatological summers, the increase of tropical nights, an increase in the number of warm days or a greater frequency of intense rainfall”, he said during his speech.
The government delegate has valued the use of NextGeneration funds in a set of ten lever policies that will allow us to move towards a greener, more digital, more cohesive Spain, from a social and territorial point of view, and more egalitarian.
During the event, coordinated by the Territorial delegate of AEMET, Juan Esteban Palenzuela, and also attended by the mayor of the city, José Antonio Serrano, the conference “Advances in meteorological observation and prediction” has been held, by Luis Bañón, State meteorologist and Head of the Unit of Studies and Developments of the Territorial Delegation of AEMET, the corresponding diplomas have been delivered to external collaborators of AEMET and recognized with a plaque to the staff of the retired agency in the last twelve months.
