The number of unemployed people registered at the Public Service of State Employment (SEPE) Office in Melilla, at the end of October, stands at 7,882. It is 419 people less than the previous month (5.6%) but 989 unemployed less than a year ago (-11.1%).
The Provincial Director of the SEPE, Jorge Vera, who appeared before the media this lunchtime, to give an account of these figures, has pointed out that the increase in unemployment has a direct relationship with the completion of the Employment Plans of the Government Delegation. “The contracting of the Employment Plans was carried out in phases and during last October the contracts of the month of May have ended,” he said.
However, he pointed out that, if we take into account what happened during the month of October 2024, unemployment increased by more than 300 people, despite the fact that no Employment Plan was being implemented, so the rise in unemployment this month was predictable.
In addition, Vera has made it clear that these 7,882 job seekers “represent 2,446 unemployed less than in 2018, when the People’s Party ruled.”
During his speech, the Director of the SEPE disaggregated the unemployment data by sector, so the Services sector is where the number of applicants has increased the most with 356 more people, followed by No Previous Employment, with 38 more people and with 10 more applicants in both Industry and Construction, as well as 5 more applicants with 5 more people.
Regarding Social Security affiliation data, Vera has reported that it stands at 25,714 affiliates, a figure that although it is reduced by 13 affiliates compared to last month (-13%) represents an increase of 1,349 affiliates (+5.5%) compared to last year.
As for the contracts, the head of the SEPE in Melilla has reported that a total of 1,495 have been signed during October, of which 652 have been indefinite, which means 43.6% of them, a point more than the national average. Vera recalled that, before the labor reform approved by this government, the percentage of indefinite contracts accounted for 8% of the total.
In terms of registered unemployment, according to sex, women with 5,228 unemployed represent 66.3% of the total, compared to the 2,654 unemployed men in our city, which represents 33.6%. And, as far as minors under 25 years old are concerned, there are 922 unemployed in Melilla.
With regard to unemployment benefits, in the autonomous city there are 1,755 beneficiaries either of contributory benefit (1,057 beneficiaries), Allowance (691 beneficiaries) or Active Insertion Income (7 beneficiaries) and the average amount received per beneficiary is 969.7 euros per month.
National data
The head of the Provincial Directorate of the SEPE has also echoed the national data, according to which at the end of October, unemployment rose by 22,101 people compared to the month of September (0.91%). It is an increase, well below the average for this month. In fact, with the exception of the period of effects of the pandemic, it is 65% less than the increase of the average of the years 2001-2024.
Thus, the registered unemployment has stood at 2,443,766 people, the lowest total in a month of October since 2007. In seasonally adjusted terms, the registered unemployment drops by 15,256 people
