“Places of leisure should be safe spaces for everyone, and women should go to them without fear.”
The Head of the Coordination Unit against Violence against Women of the Government Delegation in Melilla, Laura Segura, has referred to the patron saint’s parties and leisure areas that, especially during the summer, increase, and has stressed that “the message has to be that: women have to go to those spaces with the tranquility and security that they are spaces in freedom”.
In this sense, he has called on society to become involved in this common goal: “We cannot send a message of fear or allow the spaces of fun to be perceived as spaces of danger.”
Segura, asked about the collaboration with the Ministry of Equality of the Autonomous City, has made it clear that it always happens: “In the area of gender violence, the bridges with the area of equality must be stretched”, and he added that this collaboration extends “not only with the area of equality, but with each and every one of the administrations”.
The head of the delegation also stressed that the fundamental role of the Coordination Unit against Violence against Women is to make interinstitutional collaboration as effective as possible, since “it is what fundamentally allows us to reach women and protect them”.
As in previous editions, Segura has made progress in creating safe environments during the holidays, strengthening the joint work with the different administrations and making available to the citizens all the resources available to prevent, attend to and eradicate this form of violence.
Regarding the Punto Violeta campaign, a resource that the Government of Spain is making available to all municipalities and in all territories, it has advanced that they will continue to take them to these leisure spaces and “we will join the campaigns that are carried out locally in the field of gender violence from the area of Equality”.
