The number of unemployed people registered at the Public Service of State Employment Office (SEPE) of Melilla, at the end of July, stands at 7,638. These are 98 people less than the previous month (-1.27%) and 490 unemployed less than a year ago (-6.03%).
The Government Delegate, Sabrina Moh, and the Provincial Director of SEPE, Jorge Vera, appeared before the media this lunchtime, to give an account of these figures.
“In our city we continue with this downward trend in terms of unemployment data, for the fifth consecutive month we decreased in the number of unemployed and Melilla stands at 2,690 unemployed less than in June 2018 when the PP ruled,” said the top representative of the Government of Spain in our city.
The head of the Government Delegation also highlighted the historic figure of 25,344 members of Social Security, 223 more than last month and 681 more than twelve months ago.
“These data again highlight the benefits that some specific actions are taking in the city of Melilla in terms of active employment policies”, he said and recalled that our city, in two years -2024-2025-, is going to receive 100 million euros between active employment policies and benefits.
Historical data of affiliation and contracts
Vera, who in her speech disaggregated the data that we have known this morning, has reported the fall in unemployment by sector, so the Services sector is the one in which the number of claimants has been reduced the most with 83 people less, followed by the Construction sector where the reduction has been 17 people. In Agriculture, the number of unemployed is down by 4, while in Industry and Without Previous Employment, the number of job seekers in each of the sectors is up by 3.
By economic sectors, although all of them experience a drop in the number of unemployed, it is the Services sector that has reduced the number of claimants the most with 235 fewer people. In the Construction Sector there are 30 fewer unemployed; 17 fewer employees as far as the former unemployed are concerned, 6 fewer unemployed in Industry and two fewer unemployed in the Agriculture sector.
As for the data on affiliation to Social Security, Vera has pointed out that the 25,344 people represent a historical fact. “It is the record we have in this city in every historical series,” he said.
Specifically, in the General System there are 20,704 members, which means 246 more than in June; 4,315 members in the Autonomous System; and 79 members in the Sea System.
With regard to contracts, the head of the SEPE in Melilla has also acknowledged that we are facing an historic figure, in terms of the volume of contracts. Thus, the previous month was 1,325 contracts signed while the one that has just ended has reached 2,418, which means an increase of 1,093, that is, a monthly variation of 82.49% and an annual one with an increase of 60.88%, which means 915 more contracts.
As Vera has detailed, in terms of registered unemployment, according to sex, women with 5,036 unemployed, represent 65.93% of the total, compared to the 2,602 unemployed men in our city, which represents 34.07% . And, as far as minors under the age of 25 are concerned, there are 778 unemployed in Melilla.
With regard to unemployment benefits, in the autonomous city there are 2,635 beneficiaries either of contributory benefit (1,723 beneficiaries), Allowance (876 beneficiaries) or Active Insertion Income (37 beneficiaries) and the average amount received per beneficiary is 982.9 euros per month.
National data
The head of the Provincial Directorate of the SEPE has also echoed the national data, where unemployment at the end of July has fallen by 1,357 people (-0.06%) in relation to the month of June and is at the lowest unemployment for 18 years, standing at 2,404,606 people.
Unemployment among young people under 25 years of age fell in July by 2,561 people compared to the previous month (-1.54%). It is at its lowest level in a month of July since there are records. There are 164,146 people, after experiencing successive falls for 51 months, that is, for four years and three months.
Female unemployment continues to fall more than male unemployment nationwide and is at its lowest level since 2008. Then, for example, by unemployed sectors, the previous unemployed group, such as the agrarian group, goes down, rising a little, on the contrary, construction, industry or services. Unemployment by age and gender, since as I have already said, the unemployed under 25 years of age drops by 1.54%.
Likewise, one month more female unemployment decreased more (901 people, -0.06%) than male unemployment, which fell by 456 people (-0.05%) in relation to June. For the second month, female unemployment is below the threshold of 1.5 million (1,459,983 women), while male unemployment remains below the million (944,623 men). Compared to July 2024, male unemployment fell by 65,869 men (-6.52%) and female unemployment by 79,762 women (-5.18%).
