The Ministry of Transport is going to commission Enaire a study to see the feasibility of a new approach and landing procedure at the airport of Melilla, based on a procedure of RNP -Required Navigation Performance-, which allows to reduce the number of cancellations for low visibility.
This was announced by the Secretary General of Air and Maritime Transport, Benito Núñez, who has travelled to our city to take part in the Transport Working Group, hosted by the Government Delegation, this morning.
“From the Ministry of Transport we are going to start a study to see the feasibility and we hope to have the results within a reasonable time and be able to improve the operation of the airport if the study shows positive results,” he announced.
As Núñez explained, this study would complete, along with the extension of airport schedules that took place last year, and the reclassification of the airport to the category of 2C to 3C, “the possibility of providing a better service in the air connections of Melilla with the peninsula both on the lines in which there is a Public Service Obligation (OSP) and on the lines with Madrid and Malaga”.
In addition, as you have said, if the study were to enable this new approach and landing procedure in the city of Melilla, it would open up the possibility for airlines to operate with larger aircraft than the ATR 72 that are currently being used.
Working Group
The Delegation hosted today a new meeting of the Transport Working Group, in which, in addition to Núñez and the Delegate of the Government, Sabrina Moh, the Councilor for Development of the City, Miguel Marín, attended; the President of the Port Authority, Manuel Ángel Quevedo; the Director of the Area of Promotion of the Delegation, Juan José Martín; the Head of Civil Protection of the Delegation, Mohamed Mohamed; and representatives of the CEME -CEOE, Melimes or CGT.
The Transport Working Group, a measure included in the Integrated Socioeconomic Development Plan of the city of Melilla, was established in March 2024 with the aim of working to ensure good connectivity between our city and the peninsula at better prices, both for residents and non-residents.
