As explained by the Chief of the Documentation Division, digital ID is a project of the Ministry of the Interior developed by the National Police, within the framework of the Digital Identity Plan, together with the National Currency and Stamp Factory.
Its implementation will transform the way of accrediting identity by the citizens in their relations with the Public Administration and the private sector, which can now be done through an official application of the National Police installed on the mobile phone with the same legal validity as the physical ID and the maximum guarantees of security.
Spain is one of the first European countries to have a system for accrediting identity through the mobile phone through a simple, intuitive and effective virtual support, an advance in the way of accrediting identity to carry out any type of transaction, both in the public and private spheres.
A period of twelve months has been established for public and private entities to adopt the necessary measures for the proper functioning of the digital version of the ID. During this period, the acceptance of the new digital format will not be mandatory and both the Ministry of the Interior and the General Directorate of the Police will adopt different initiatives to promote its use among citizens.
The ID in physical format already coexists with digital identification through the mobile, which does not completely replace the traditional card. Access to the digital format is made through the official application of the National Police: “MiDNI”, whose free download is available in the main digital markets, which in the first phase allows the accreditation of identity of Spanish citizens with the maximum guarantees of security, both face-to-face and non-face-to-face, allowing to verify the authenticity of the identity manifested through the official application.
