The number of unemployed people registered at the Public Service of State Employment (SEPE) Office in Melilla, at the end of February, stands at 8,866. It is 177 people more than the previous month (2.04%) and 97 more than a year ago (1.11%).
The Provincial Director of the SEPE, Jorge Vera, has recalled that, historically, February is not a good month for unemployment data because the end of the sales campaign occurs. In fact, by economic sectors, the Services sector is where the number of claimants has increased the most with 95 people.
It has also pointed out as one of the causes of the significant increase in unemployed persons without previous employment, a total of 72 people, the start of the Employment Plans.
Continuing with the economic sectors, in Industry there has been an increase of 11 unemployed, while in Agriculture it remains unchanged, and falls in one person in the Construction sector.
With regard to Social Security data, the number of participants stood at 24,418, which represents a decrease of 114 (-0.46%) compared to the previous month but an increase of 75 participants (0.31%) compared to February 2024. Specifically, in the General System there are 19,993 members; 4,352 members in the Autonomous System; and 83 members in the Sea System.
Upload indefinite hiring
The Provincial Director of the SEPE has highlighted the fact that of the 806 contracts that have materialized during the last month of February, 399 have been indefinite, which means 49.5%, more than six points above the national average.
“Indefinite hiring is maintained month by month above 40% of hiring, which makes contracts much more stable, which was one of the objectives of this Government,” he said and recalled that before the labor reform indefinite hiring did not exceed 8%.
As Vera has detailed, in terms of registered unemployment, it refers, according to sex, to women with 5,760 unemployed, which is 64.9%, compared to 3,106 unemployed men, which is 35.1%. And, as far as minors under the age of 25 are concerned, there are 972 unemployed.
As far as unemployment benefits are concerned, in the autonomous city there are 2,955 beneficiaries either of contributory benefit (1,219 beneficiaries), Allowance (1,554 beneficiaries) or Active Insertion Income (182 beneficiaries) and the average amount received per beneficiary is 1,008 euros per month.
National data
The head of the Provincial Directorate of the SEPE has also echoed the national data, where, at the end of February, the number of unemployed people has decreased by 5,994 people in relation to the month of January (-0.23%). February is a month in which the usual trend is to increase the number of registered and registered employees in the public employment services.
The total unemployment is 2,593,449 people, the lowest figure in a month of February since 2008. As of February 2024, unemployment has fallen by 166,959 people (-6.05%). In seasonally adjusted terms, unemployment has also fallen by 10,287 people.
In relation to the month of January, the registered unemployment fell in the Services sectors by 5,764 people (-0.31%), in Construction by 3,409 people (-1.76%) and in Industry by 2,214 people (-1.10%). Unemployment has increased in Agriculture by 210 people (0.25%) and among the No Previous Job group by 5,183 people (2.22%).
The female unemployment stood at 1,562,954 women, decreasing by 477 (-0.03%) compared to the month of January. It is the lowest number of unemployed in this month since 2008. Compared to a year ago, female unemployment fell by 92,612 women (-5.59%).
As for male unemployment, it has dropped by 5,517 men (-0.53%) compared to January data and stands at 1,030,495 men. In relation to February 2024, male unemployment fell by 74,347 (-6.73%). Among young people under 25 years of age, it rose in February by 6,522 people (3.46%) compared to January.
The number of contracts concluded was 1,098,491, of which 481,683 are indefinite, 43.85% of the total and in terms of unemployment benefits in January. At the national level the number of beneficiaries at the end of the month was 1,808,297 people, which represents 5.9% less than the previous year in this same month. The coverage rate of the unemployment protection system during the month of January 2025 has been 74.11% and reaches its highest value since 2011.
