At the end of December, the number of unemployed persons registered with the Public Service of State Employment (SEPE) of Melilla has decreased by 336 persons (-3.70%) compared to the previous month. In this way, the registered unemployment has decreased to 8,520 people in our city.
The Provincial Director of the SEPE, Jorge Vera, in a public appearance, has valued this data that he has described as “very good”, reflecting a decrease in structural unemployment in Melilla. In fact, he recalled that with the Government of Mariano Rajoy Melilla, in December 2015, 12,000 people were unemployed. “With the current government, barely 9,000 unemployed have been brushed aside,” he said.
By economic sectors, the largest decline has occurred in the Services sector, with a decrease of 271 unemployed, followed by the previous unemployed group, where there has been a decrease of 48 unemployed. There have also been decreases in the sectors of Construction, with a decrease of 14 unemployed, of Industry, with two unemployed less, and Agriculture, with one unemployed less.
With regard to Social Security data, the number of members increases by 320 compared to last month and by 66 compared to a year ago, raising the figure to 24,807 members in Melilla. In particular, affiliation increases by 313 people in the general regime and by 7 people in Self-Employed, while it falls by 1 in the regime of the sea.

The Provincial Director of the SEPE has highlighted the fact that of the 1,235 contracts that have materialized during the last month of December, 488 have been indefinite, which means 39.5%, almost 3 points above the national average.
“Indefinite contracting is maintained month by month around 40% of contracting, which makes contracts much more stable, which was one of the objectives of this Government,” he said.
As Vera has detailed, in terms of registered unemployment, it refers, according to sex, to women with 5,491 unemployed, which represents 64.45%, compared to the 3,029 unemployed men that there are, which represents 35.55%. And, as far as minors under the age of 25 are concerned, there are 978 unemployed.
As far as unemployment benefits are concerned, in the autonomous city there are 3,195 beneficiaries either of contributory benefit (1,286 beneficiaries), Allowance (1,706 beneficiaries) or Active Insertion Income (203 beneficiaries) and the average amount received per beneficiary is 1,002.6 euros per month.
National data
The head of the Provincial Directorate of the SEPE has also echoed the national data, where unemployment fell by 25,300 people (-0.98%) compared to the previous month. Thus, total registered unemployment has remained at 2,560,718 people, the lowest figure since December 2007. The year-on-year decrease was 146,738 people (-5.42%) and in seasonally adjusted terms, the registered unemployment fell by 9,166 people.
By economic sectors, with respect to the month of November, the registered unemployment fell in the Services sectors by 21,408 people (-1.15%), among the No Previous Employment group by 7,144 people (-2.94%). and in Agriculture in 2,019 people (-2.36%). Unemployment increased in Construction by 4,396 people (2.26%) and Industry by 875 people (0.44%).
As for unemployment by sex and age, the registered unemployment among women decreased by 25,238 women (-1.62%) in relation to the month of November. The total stands at 1,531,562, the lowest figure since December 2008. Male unemployment remains stable with 62 fewer unemployed (-0.01%) and stands at 1,029,156 men. Compared to December 2023, unemployment among women fell by 85,411 (-5.28%) and among men by 61,327 (-5.62%).
Unemployment among young people under 25 years of age fell in the month of December by 10,903 people (-5.54%) compared to the previous month. The total records its minimum level in the historical series with 185,801 young people registered.
A total of 1,182,706 contracts were registered in the month of December. The accumulated contract in the twelve months of 2024 reached a figure of 15,420,104, which means 24,101 contracts less (-0.16%) than in the same period of the previous year. It is the lowest figure since 2013. In December 2024, 437,024 indefinite work contracts were registered, representing 36.95% of all contracts.
Finally, in terms of benefits in the month of November, the beneficiaries existing at the end of the month were a total of 1,802,453. The average monthly cost per beneficiary person was 1,130 euros, which means an increase over the same month of the previous year of 63.3 euros (5.9%).
