Melilla closed the month of October with 8,871 job seekers, according to the data released this morning by the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy. It is 136 more than the previous month and 108 more than twelve months ago.
The Provincial Director of the State Public Employment Service (SEPE), Jorge Vera, explained that unemployment has increased throughout Spain and, compared to the other Autonomous Communities, Melilla is the region of the country in which unemployment is least increased.
By sector, most of the unemployment that has been recorded comes from the scope of the Services, with a total of 102 people, but there has also been a significant number of people without previous employment, specifically 37. In the Construction sector, unemployment is reduced by 3 people, while in Agriculture it rises by 1 person and in Industry, by 10.
Social Security has increased to 24,365 members in October in Melilla, which means an increase of 15 members, with the General System accounting for the largest number of members with 19,940, followed by the Self-Employed, with 4,336 members and the Sea with 89.
With regard to registered unemployment according to sex, 5,697 job seekers are women in our city (64.22%) compared to 3,174 men (35.78%). And there are a total of 1,041 children under 25 years of age.
Almost 50% of undefined contracts
During the last month of October in our city a total of 1,463 contracts were carried out, which is 0.06% less than during the month of September. Of the contracts signed during the month of October, 722 are indefinite, which represents 49.35% of the total. The head of this body in our city recalled that, before the approval of the Labor Reform by the Executive presided over by Pedro Sánchez, indefinite contracts accounted for 8% of the total.
As far as unemployment benefits are concerned, in the autonomous city there are 3,138 beneficiaries either of contributory benefit (1,231 beneficiaries), Allowance (1,706 beneficiaries) or Active Insertion Income (201 beneficiaries) and the average amount received per beneficiary is 999.1 euros/month.
National data
The head of the Provincial Directorate of the SEPE has also referred to the national data, where the number of registered unemployed people has increased by 26,769 (1.04%) compared to the previous month. This is an increase lower than the average for this month and the smallest increase since 2006, except for the years 2021 2022 due to the effects of the pandemic.
The registered unemployment stood at 2,602,054 people. This is the lowest figure since 2007. In year-on-year terms, unemployment has fallen by 157,350 people (-5.70%). It is also reduced in seasonally adjusted terms by 17,296 people.
By economic sectors compared to September, the registered unemployment fell in the Construction sector by 1,676 people (-0.85%). It increases in Industry 1,547 people (0.77%), Agriculture 1,603 people (1.87%) and Services 22,332 (1.21%). In the Collective Without Previous Employment it increases by 2,963 people (1.23%). Unemployment is decreasing in all sectors compared to October 2023.
In terms of unemployment by sex and age, female unemployment increases by 13,873 women (0.89%) and stands at a total of 1,567.61. It is the lowest number of unemployed since 2008. Male unemployment stood at 1,034,443, rising by 12,896 people (1.26%) compared to September.
Compared to October 2023, female unemployment fell by 93,444 women (-5.63%). The male decreased by 63,906 men (-5.82%). For its part, unemployment among young people under the age of 25 rose in October by 8,361 people (4.35%) compared to the previous month.
The total number of contracts registered during the month of October, a month with more working days than in the previous year, has increased to 1,527,007. In October 2024, 664,195 open-ended employment contracts were registered, representing 43.50% of all contracts.
With regard to benefits in the month of September, the beneficiaries and beneficiaries existing at the end of the month were a total of 1,703,095 people. The coverage of the unemployment protection system during the month of September 2024 was 70.64%. The same indicator in September 2023 was 66.07%, which means an increase of 6.9%. The September 2024 rate is the highest since 2010.
The total expenditure for September 2024 amounted to €1,904.7 million. The average monthly expenditure per beneficiary, not including the agricultural subsidy of Andalusia and Extremadura, in the month of September 2024 was €1,144.1, which means an increase over the same month of the previous year of €44.5 (4.0%).
