The Council of Ministers approved on Tuesday a series of grants worth more than 50 million euros that are strategic for the development of sport in Spain, to improve the preparation and conditions of athletes, to contribute to the implementation of sports programs of federations and clubs, as well as to promote the sector as a pole of economic attraction through the organization of major events.
Among the agreements adopted, the call for grants, worth 17 million euros, for the program "CSD Team Spain", to which the Government of Spain will give continuity for the cycle of Los Angeles 2028 as a matrix project of the Superior Council of Sports. This programme, newly created for the 2022-2024 triennium and with a total allocation of 50 million euros, is making it possible to meet the specific needs of the select group of athletes and teams who, responding to technical criteria, have more options to achieve good results in the international arena.
In addition to the 17 million euros that will be allocated to the “CSD Team Spain” program in 2024, the Council of Ministers on Tuesday agreed to call, in the amount of 19 million euros, Spanish sports federations to finance aid for athletes participating in international competitions and collective sports clubs that contribute to the preparation of national teams.
Implementation of sports programs in 2024
One of the agreements of the Council of Ministers has been the approval of the Royal Decree of direct grants to public administrations and institutions for the execution of actions of sporting interest during 2024.
The Council of Ministers has approved travel grants for athletes from the Autonomous City of Melilla, through the direct granting of travel grants for athletes residing in the Autonomous City of Melilla to ensure participation in official non-professional state competitions approved in the calendars of the different Spanish Sports Federations.
The amount of this grant for the Autonomous City amounts to 450,000 euros. The payment of this subsidy will be made in advance and at once. Likewise, it will be compatible with the receipt of other subsidies, aid, income or resources for the same purpose, from any public or private administrations or entities, national, of the European Union or of international bodies, provided that the sum of all of them does not exceed the cost of the subsidized activity.
The Government of Spain considers sport as a key element to promote the national identity and prestige of our country, hence the commitment to improve the conditions of athletes and to attract major sporting events due to their impact on employment and tourism. This government’s commitment to sport is being integral and sustained. The CSD budget exceeds 1.8 billion euros in the period 2018-2024.
