At the end of July, the number of unemployed persons registered with the Public Service of State Employment (SEPE) of Melilla has decreased by 193 persons (-2.32%) compared to the previous month. In this way, the registered unemployment has been reduced to 8,128 people in our city.
The Provincial Director of the SEPE, Jorge Vera, in a public appearance, gave an account of the data in our city and explained that, by economic sector, the greatest decrease has occurred in the services sector, where there has been a decrease of 186 unemployed.
With regard to Social Security data, the number of members is reduced by 213 (-0.85%), leaving the figure at 24,663 members in Melilla. One situation, he explained, is due to figures such as the fixed-discontinuous ones, which have an indefinite relationship with their administration but which have periods of inactivity that usually correspond to the months of July and August, or other construction and service contracts that have also ended this month.
In his statement to the media, the Provincial Director of the SEPE has highlighted the fact that the number of contracts carried out increased from 1,205 in June to 1,503 last month, of which, in addition, 565 have been indefinite, which represents 37.59% of the total. A figure very similar to the national figure.
The head of this agency in our city has reported that the unemployment registered in foreigners in our lower city, going from 2,018 unemployed in June to 1,970 in July, in the same way that the unemployment in women and men is also low, although the proportions of previous months are still maintained, given that unemployment among women represents 5,214 people, which implies 64.15%, compared to 2,914 men seeking employment that represent 35.85%.
With regard to youth unemployment, Vera has stressed that the number of unemployed people under 25 years of age stood at 893 in July, which means that it fell by 22 people compared to the previous month.
As far as unemployment benefits are concerned, in the autonomous city there are 2,770 beneficiaries either of contributory benefit (1,081 beneficiaries), Allowance (1,501 beneficiaries) or Active Insertion Income (188 beneficiaries) and the average amount received per beneficiary is 974 euros/month.
National data
The head of the Provincial Directorate of the SEPE has also echoed the national data where unemployment fell by 10,830 people in July and the total stands at 2,550,237.
The registered unemployment has stood at 2,550,237 people, approaching with this new descent for the sixth consecutive month to the barrier of 2.5 million unemployed.
As he pointed out, unemployment fell most among women in absolute terms and was at its lowest since October 2008 and in year-on-year terms, unemployment fell by 127,637 people (-4.8%) while the rate of coverage of benefits stood at 71%.4
In addition, Jorge Vera, has highlighted that, in terms of unemployment in Autonomous Communities, Melilla has been placed in the seventh place, being thus the seventh region that has the lowest unemployment in the country this month.
