At the end of April, the number of unemployed persons registered with the Public Service of State Employment (SEPE) of Melilla has decreased by 133 persons (-1.5%) compared to the previous month. In this way, the registered unemployment has been reduced to 8,684 people in our city.
The Provincial Director of the SEPE, Jorge Vera, in a public appearance, has analyzed the data by economic activity, where he explained that the main differences have been the decrease in unemployment that has occurred with 80 fewer people in the services sector and 58 fewer people in the previous category of unemployed.
The registered unemployment, according to sex, indicates that unemployment affects more women with 5,592 unemployed, which represents 64.3%, compared to 3,092 unemployed men, which represents 35.6%. And, as far as minors under 25 years of age are concerned, there are 1,001 unemployed, being 490 men and 511 women.
With regard to Social Security data, Melilla repeats the figure with respect to the previous month, with 24,550 people affiliated. Specifically, there are 20,162 participants in the General Regime, 4,303 self-employed and 85 in the Sea sector.
Vera also referred to the contracts that have materialized during the past month, which have involved 1,170 contracts, of which 496 have been indefinite, which represents 42.4% of the total.
As far as unemployment benefits are concerned, in the autonomous city there are 3,167 beneficiaries either of contributory benefit (1,310 beneficiaries), Allowance (1,689 beneficiaries) or Active Insertion Income (168 beneficiaries) and the average amount received per beneficiary is 966 euros/month.
National data
The head of the Provincial Directorate of the SEPE has also echoed the national data, where unemployment has fallen by 60,503 unemployed and stands at 2,660,500 unemployed, “the lowest figure since September 2008”.
“In the last year the reduction has been 4.4%,” she said, explaining that unemployment among women fell by 76,729 in the last year, which means, she said, 4.57% less.
“Unemployment is also falling in all economic sectors and in the previous unemployed group”, he reported, while explaining that unemployment among young people has also fallen by 8.26% this month and is falling in all autonomous communities and cities, except in the Canary Islands.
“Indefinite hiring is also strengthened with 44.1% of the contracts signed in April and protection for unemployed people is improved with a coverage rate of 70.4%,” he said.
