- The performances will include the rehabilitation of the historical fence of the Paseo del Rey.
- The works will also modernise the means of elevation and improve the general accessibility of the station.
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through the public operator Renfe, advances in the improvement of the station of Príncipe Pío with new actions aimed at strengthening the conservation of the historical environment through the rehabilitation of the fence of the Paseo del Rey. In addition, the means of elevation will be modernized, improving accessibility, safety and mobility of passengers.
The station building belongs to the modernist architecture of the late nineteenth century and maintains part of its original elements so it is catalogued as a singular building. Its facade retains its imperial style while its interior has been completely adapted to be a modern, functional and accessible station.
Historical-artistic property
The tender for the works, with a maximum amount of 705,973.87 euros, ended on September 21. The action is considered to be of the utmost urgency due to the technical and patrimonial constraints of the project, so the awarding company must have the necessary classification to intervene in historical-artistic real estate.
In addition, through a file independent of the rehabilitation of the historical fence of Paseo del Rey, Renfe has awarded an additional action related to the replacement of the means of elevation of the station.
The intervention contemplates the integral renovation of Príncipe Pío’s lifting means, by replacing thirteen escalators and the current lifting platform with a new elevator. It also includes the necessary actions to adapt these facilities to current regulations and improve their operating conditions, safety, fire protection, drainage and accessibility.
With these actions, Renfe reinforces its commitment to the modernization of its facilities and to the continuous improvement of the travel experience. Once this phase has been carried out, the two elevators attached to the façade of the theater and the two mechanical stairs of the entrance through Paseo del Rey will remain pending renovation, performances planned within the integral renovation of the station that Adif has planned to undertake.
