The Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda, through the General Secretariat of Urban Agenda, Housing and Architecture, has litigated for 1,722,974.15 euros (VAT included) the contest of projects for the expansion of the House of Architecture and rehabilitate the outdoor spaces of the complex of New Ministries. The competition will involve a jury and award the project and the direction of the project to the winner.

Project competition for the extension of the Casa de la Arquitectura

The project competition has been chosen with the participation of a jury of independent prestige, to select the proposal that, due to its architectural quality, functionality, bioclimatic and sustainability solutions adopted, as well as its technical, constructive and economic feasibility, is valued by the members of the Jury as the best and most suitable to carry out the work.

The jury will designate a single winner among the proposals. You will be awarded the first prize of 30,000 euros. In addition, a second prize of 20,000 euros will be awarded, a third prize of 15,000 euros and two accésits of 10,000 euros each (excluding VAT).

In addition, the project design and management contract will be awarded to the winner of the competition. The deadline for the drafting of the project is eight months, estimating a total amount for this service contract of the remaining 1,650,374.15 euros (VAT included) of this award.

With this type of competition, the Ministry wants to carry out an exemplary work and promote the use of this system of contracting projects that prioritize the assessment of the quality of the architecture in line with the promulgation of the law of the Quality of the Architecture.

Contemplated actions

The purpose of the project competition is to extend, adapt and put into use the physical headquarters of the Casa de la Arquitectura, guaranteeing its functionality as a museum of state architecture.

The works will include the design and adaptation of the existing exhibition spaces, the creation of a representative entrance hall; as well as the implementation of a store and a cafeteria linked to the museum tour. It will also have a library area adapting a study/research area and the necessary offices and offices for the staff managing the operation of La Casa de la Arquitectura.

It will also include specialized technical areas of conservation and treatment of exhibition material, spaces for workshops, courses and events, meeting rooms and administrative offices. Likewise, warehouses and warehouses will be established with sufficient capacity to house a growing museum collection, which will integrate digital documentation, graphics and drawings as well as models and large three-dimensional pieces.

The contract includes the elaboration of a Master Plan of the public space outside the Complex of New Ministries, with special attention to its Grand Plaza. This strategic document should define the phases of intervention, the model of management and uses of space, the proposal of landscape and urban renaturalization, the definition of urban service networks, and the technical solutions to improve biodiversity, environmental quality and urban comfort.

In addition, it will contemplate the landscape and functional integration of the accesses, pedestrian routes and staging areas, ensuring a balanced coexistence between transit, vegetation and citizen activity.

Together, the action will provide the Casa de la Arquitectura and its immediate surroundings with a physical, functional and environmental framework consistent with the cultural, sustainable and representative objectives of this new state institution, consolidating the Complex of New Ministries as a focal point of the Spanish architectural culture and promoting the revitalization of the neighborhood in which it is circumscribed and its urban ecosystem.

Architectural Rehabilitation Program

This action to protect and safeguard the Spanish Cultural Heritage is carried out within the framework of the Architectural Heritage Rehabilitation Program, which consists of the execution of relevant works of rehabilitation of the Spanish architectural heritage, contributing to the creation, improvement or maintenance of equipment, endowments or services of interest or public use, with the budgets of the Ministry.

This Architectural Rehabilitation Program has been in operation since 1988 and to date, the accumulated amount invested exceeds 600 million euros.
