The Community of Madrid recorded a slight increase in unemployment in October, with 2,281 people more registered than the previous month, in a behavior aligned with the usual seasonality of the labor market after the end of the summer campaign. The total number of unemployed people in the region stands at 280,337.
Despite the monthly increase, the year-on-year evolution continues to be positive, with 11,737 people unemployed less than in October 2024, reflecting a sustained improvement in employment compared to last year and a decrease of 4.2%. This data is part of a national context of stability and consolidation of the labour market, with high levels of indefinite recruitment and a strengthened social protection system.
Women continue to suffer unemployment at a higher rate than men, in absolute terms; however, women under the age of 25 are able to improve their job prospects. In fact, in the community of Madrid, there are 9,612 unemployed women compared to 11,059 men. In other words, unemployment among the youngest among the unemployed stands at 6.87%.
As for foreigners, they represent only 16.9% of the registered unemployment in Madrid, with 47,564 people unemployed, most of them non-EU (30,658)
By sector, in Madrid it is the services sector that records the highest figures 226,677, 75.4% of registered unemployment; in relation to the previous month, unemployment has risen in services and industry and has fallen in construction.
In the Community of Madrid, more open-ended contracts have been signed than the national average; during the month of October, a total of 228,887 were signed in the Community of Madrid, 46.99% open-ended.
Regarding the social protection of workers, during the month of October in Madrid a total of 47,876 were presented with a resolution period of 6.79 days, the highest at the national level. In total, there are 153,141 unemployment benefits in Madrid with an average benefit of 1051 euros, 13.86% of foreigners both from the Community and from outside the Community.
National context
In the country as a whole, unemployment stood at 2.44 million people, the lowest figure in a month of October since 2007. In seasonally adjusted terms, unemployment fell by more than 15,000 people, confirming the strength of the labor market.
Compared to the previous year, national unemployment fell by more than 158,000 people, which represents a fall of 6% year-on-year.
Recruitment: stability and quality of employment
During the month of October, 1.51 million contracts were signed, of which more than 643,000 were indefinite, representing around 42.6% of the total. This ratio reflects the maintenance of job stability achieved after job reform and the consolidation of indefinite contracts as the predominant formula.
In the year’s cumulative, there are more than 13.1 million registered contracts, with more than 5.4 million indefinite.
Evolution by sector
At the national level, unemployment decreased in the construction sector, while it increased in the rest, mainly in services, following the usual trend after the end of the summer season.
Youth and women
Unemployment among young people under the age of 25 stood at around 193,800 people, the lowest level in a month of October in the entire historical series.
Female unemployment also reached its lowest level for a month of October since 2007, while the coverage rate of the unemployment protection system stood at around 76%, reinforcing the social protection of unemployed people.
