The Community of Madrid will record more than 1.1 million long-distance trips for the "1st Summer Traffic Operation - 2024", which starts today at 3:00 p.m. and will last until Monday, July 1, according to the forecasts of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).
For the whole summer (from Monday, July 1 to Saturday, August 31, 2024), this forecast amounts to 19,368,100 long-distance movements.
At the national level, a total of 6,070,000 trips are planned for the first operation, and 94,027,000 trips are planned for “Operation Summer-2024”, which means more than 1.5 million daily trips during the summer season.
These data have been put on the table at the Autonomous Commission of Traffic and Road Safety, which has presided over the delegate of the Government of Spain in the Community of Madrid, Francisco Martín Aguirre, at the headquarters of the DGT in Madrid.
The measures that the DGT is going to implement in the Community of Madrid have also been presented, and the other special operations that are scheduled and with repercussions in the region have been addressed, such as those of special surveillance during the weekends; a specific speed and alcohol control at the wheel; Operation Paso del Angol; and collaboration with the Autonomous Community in the campaign against fires.
To carry them out, it will have the reinforcement of half a hundred people from the DGT and the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard, to which all the autonomous and local services, the local police and the security and emergency devices will be added, whose dedication the government delegate has wanted to “thank and recognize”.
All of this “so that citizens can enjoy their holidays in sufficient conditions of mobility and security”, said Francisco Martín, who has conveyed a request for “prudence and common sense” to the drivers.
Main traffic characteristics in Summer 2024
The traffic period corresponding to Summer 2024, which begins today and ends on September 8, is characterized by six different events from the rest of the year, such as the increase in the number of long-distance journeys, the increase in the intensity of traffic during weekends and holidays, less conflict in access to large urban centers, greater intensity of traffic on coastal roads and tourist areas, greater presence of vehicles with foreign registration on national roads, especially of Maghrevi origin and greater number of competitive sports activities that use the roads for their development.
