The government delegate to the Community of Madrid, Francisco Martín Aguirre, has today attended the presentation of the Medal of Merit of Civil Protection, in its gold category with red badge, to the lieutenant general of the Spanish Army (R), Luis Martínez Meijide.
The former head of the Emergency Military Unit until last August has received this distinction from the acting Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska. The acting Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, has also participated in the event.
The lieutenant general, who has gone into the reserve after more than forty years of service in the Armed Forces, has dealt in the last years of his career with emergencies such as the coronavirus pandemic, the Filomena storm and the volcano of La Palma, which are some of the most significant interventions in the history of the UME.
