- The Central Electoral Board has agreed that the postal vote for the regional and municipal elections can be deposited in the usual opening hours of the post offices throughout Spain until Thursday, May 25
- In the Community of Madrid, 186,952 requests to vote by post have been admitted, 137,470 of them presented face-to-face in the network of post offices and 49,482 in a telematic way
According to the agreement adopted by the Central Electoral Board, the deadline for the deposit of the postal vote for the regional and municipal elections is extended until Thursday, May 25, in the usual time of the post offices throughout Spain.
This deadline initially ended on Wednesday, May 24, but with the enlargement decision adopted, citizens who have requested to exercise their right to vote by correspondence for the regional and municipal elections to be held on May 28 will have more time to deposit their vote.
Correos must ensure the delivery of these envelopes with votes at the respective electoral tables on Sunday, May 28, within the legally established deadlines.
Likewise, according to the agreement of the Central Electoral Board, in the post offices of Melilla the identification of the voter will be required through the presentation of ID, Passport or Driving License; as well as in the other post offices of Spain if the vote by mail that you deposit is directed to any electoral table of the Autonomous City of Melilla.
On the other hand, given the celebration of public holidays in different localities of Spain on dates close to the regional and municipal elections, citizens who wish to exercise their right to vote by mail are recommended to try not to wait until the last day and to take advantage of the hourly length of the post offices.
Correos is putting all the technological, logistical and human resources necessary to ensure compliance with the commitments entrusted to it in the electoral processes. Specifically, Correos has made 2,500 contracts of reinforcement, both for offices and for the distribution of shipments and the necessary tasks in the logistics centers.
Over 1,082,000 mail-in requests supported
Correos has accepted 1,082,030 applications from citizens who wish to exercise their right to vote by post in the regional and municipal elections that will be held on Sunday, May 28, 2023.
Of these, 827,962 have been presented in person in the network of post offices and 254,068 telematically through the Post website, by electronic signature and accepting as valid identification systems the certificates of natural person recognized by the Ministrio de Industria and the electronic DNI (DNI-e).
These figures represent 5.01% more than the number of applications admitted in the previous autonomous and municipal elections held on May 26, 2019, the date on which the elections to the European Parliament were also held.
In the Community of Madrid, 186,952 requests to vote by mail have been accepted, 137,470 of them presented in person in the network of post offices and 49,482 requests to vote by post have been accepted, and 49,482 requests have been submitted electronically.
Delivery of electoral documentation
After verifying the registration of the applicants in the census, the Provincial Delegations of the Electoral Census Office send the consignments with the electoral documentation (certificate of registration in the census, envelopes and ballot papers of all the candidacies) to the address indicated by the voter in the application, on a certified and urgent basis. These shipments began on May 8.
The postman or mail wallet will make at least two attempts to deliver this documentation in hand to the recipient himself, leaving the notice to pick it up at his office in case it has not been possible to make that delivery in hand.
The Post staff will verify the identity of the voter through the ID, Passport or Driving Permit and will note the number of the identification document attesting to the receipt of the envelopes and ballot papers with the signature of the delivery by the applicant.
Until yesterday, Correos has already made 685,801 electoral documents available to voters and 385,531 postal votes have already been admitted for the regional and municipal elections.
Census cards and electoral propaganda
The collaboration of Correos in the regional and municipal elections also extends to the distribution of registration cards in the census and to the sending of electoral propaganda, in addition to communications to members of the Electoral Tables, sending to the municipalities the list of the census, collection of documentation on the day of the elections, etc.
The State Society has already distributed the 35,531,011 census cards sent by the National Institute of Statistics to the homes of citizens with the right to vote on May 28, containing the data of their registration in the census, as well as the school and the corresponding voting table.
In addition, Correos is distributing the electoral propaganda shipments of the different parties and coalitions that attend the elections. All of them are public service obligations that Correos has entrusted as the operator designated by the State to provide the Universal Postal Service in Spain.
