The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has activated a device this Friday Special surveillance and security on the occasion of the Christmas Special Operation, which will extend until Tuesday, January 6, 2026, and in which about 235,000 displacements are expected.

As usual, different phases have been established that coincide with the main Christmas festivities:

- From Friday, December 19, to Thursday, December 25.

- End of the year: From Friday, December 26, to Thursday, January 1.

- Reyes: From Friday, January 2, to Tuesday, January 6, when the special Christmas device will be concluded.

History of accidents

In the special Christmas operation of the previous campaign, there were no accidents with fatal or serious victims on interurban roads in La Rioja.

Recommendations

- Inform yourself, before embarking on the trip, about the situation of the roads and the environmental conditions.

- Have the car in perfect condition. Check brakes, clean windows, lighting (see and be seen), tires in good condition and with adequate pressure, etc., before leaving.

- Schedule the trip in advance, avoid night driving and the days and hours of mass travel.

- Calm driving. During the trip, breaks must be made every two hours, approximately. Inattentiveness in driving is the main trigger for serious accidents.

- Always drive as if you were carrying the main course of the Christmas meal.

- Moderate speed. Do not try to recover the time lost in the retentions.

- Extreme security measures. Belt, DRI, helmet.

- At the wheel, the only safe rate is 0.0.

In winter conditions:

- With rain: Do not brake abruptly, increase safety distance, reduce speed.

- In fog: Adapt speed and safety distance to visibility; turn on crossover lights and fog lights.

- With snow: Avoiding sudden acceleration or braking, maintaining reduced speed; if winter tyres are not available, placing chains on the driving wheels.

- With ice: Avoiding sudden braking or changes in direction as well as accelerations or decelerations and overtaking.

It is important that it is added to the agenda of the mobile AA+ the name and phone of the person you want to be notified in case of emergency. This simple gesture facilitates the localization work, both for the professionals of the emergency services and the Security Forces.
