After completing the phase of dismantling the old Courts of the Rioja capital by the City of Logroño, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda (MIVAU) foresees that the start of the works of expansion of the Breton Theater will take place in mid-August 2025.
The term of execution of these works is estimated at 38 months, anticipating their completion in 2028.
The Government delegate in La Rioja, Beatriz Arraiz Nalda, and the Mayor of Logroño, Conrado Escobar Las Heras, visited the Breton Theater this morning to announce the next steps to follow in the project to expand it.
Arraiz Nalda commented that “with the imminent start of the expansion works of the Breton Theater in mid-August, we are therefore one more step towards making this great project for the city of Logroño a reality, which is an example of how thanks to the collaboration of both administrations, Government of Spain and Municipality of Logroño, and the co-responsibility in the financing of policies, actions can be carried out in the territories”.
For his part, the mayor of Logroño, Conrado Escobar, highlighted “the reasonable agility in the deadlines with which the two administrations that collaborate in the project are dealing with the execution of the works”. In this regard, he recalled that the dismantling of the old courts was approved by the City Council in October for an amount of 595,477.81 euros, the works began in January and have recently been completed. “A stele that now also follows the Ministry with that next date of beginning of the works of expansion of the theater.”
Escobar has highlighted and thanked “the degree of collaboration that is taking place between the Ministry of Housing and the City of Logroño in the expansion of our cultural flagship. An infrastructure with a new room for small and medium format shows and other complementary areas that will allow for a new cultural and scenic space adapted to the current needs of the sector, multipurpose and that will allow a greater role for local groups.”
The mayor also stressed that “with this very important project we are getting Logroño to continue growing as a cultural reference in the north of Spain. It will be a new impulse to a varied and attractive programming that has an important follow-up of Logroñeses and visitors, which can now be expanded. And an impulse that brings together the work of different municipal corporations and the two administrations that we are collaborating to make it possible.”
New scenic spaces
The delegate of the Government explained that on June 24, 2025, the award of the contract for works of extension of the Breton Theatre to the UTE Proviser-Indenort was published in the Public Sector Contracting Platform, for 8,046,435.5€ (VAT included).
These extension works are intended to have a building equipped with new scenic spaces that allow to complete the cultural program of the city and that responds to criteria of sustainability, energy efficiency and environmental aspects that make it a model of reference. To execute the new building, the annex building, previously occupied by the courts, has already been dismantled.
The new building that will expand the Breton Theater will have, in general, a main stage room with a minimum capacity of 250 people and a stage box of 20 m in height, a second room for multipurpose use for small performances and a minimum capacity of 80 people, as well as offices, warehouses, dressing rooms and a nucleus of elevators that will allow a correct communication between its different floors and those of the current Breton Theater of the Blacksmiths, thus allowing universal accessibility in all public spaces.
