The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) carried out from 7 to 13 April the special surveillance and speed control campaign in La Rioja, during which 1,122 vehicles were reported, 6.81% of the 16,456 controlled.
The aim of the campaign was to raise awareness of the dangers of over-speed driving, the third most common concurrent factor in traffic accidents in Spain, especially in those with fatalities. In 20% of accidents with victims that occurred in La Rioja during 2024, inadequate speed was present as a cause of them.
The campaign of the DGT involved both the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard and the local police of Logroño, Santo Domingo de la Calzada and Lardero. For her, preventive work was carried out with the presence of patrols and overspeed was monitored and controlled by means of fixed, static and mobile radars.
The campaign was carried out in the interurban and urban roads of the autonomous community, but especially on conventional roads, in the sections where the greatest accident has been detected or in those sections that, due to their layout, are likely to cause accidents due to inadequate speed.
Speed Control Points
In addition to these periodic campaigns, the Directorate of Traffic uses other speed control tools such as fixed radars, mobile radars or air control from the Agency ' s helicopters.
This Plan aims to reduce the number, not only of fatal accidents but also of serious injuries, since it is demonstrated that speed not only affects the risk of being involved in a traffic accident but also that, the faster it will be difficult to react in time to prevent the accident and the more serious the injuries produced as a result of it.
