From June 3 to 9, the DGT will develop a campaign to intensify the control and surveillance of traffic in sections of works on interurban roads. It is included in the frequency of the works required for the conservation of the same and in the non-compliance of the signage of works by the drivers, in particular, the speed limitation, an important factor of accident of the operators working on the roads open to traffic.
This campaign aims to reduce the number of traffic accidents, as well as the number of injuries and deaths, that occur in sections of works. It also aims to make drivers aware of the need to improve their behaviour when they travel through these sections in works open to traffic.
Workers on the roads, during their working day, assume an additional risk factor of running over, not caused by the very characteristics of the work, but associated with the characteristics of their location on the roads open to road traffic.
According to data from the National Registry of Traffic Accident Victims, during 2022 there were a total of 172 traffic accidents related to maintenance and maintenance work on the roads, of which 22 accidents involved workers who worked or walked on the road or in its vicinity (pedestrians). The other 150 traffic accidents at the construction sites involved maintenance and maintenance workers in their vehicles.
Of the total number of deaths on interurban roads in that year (135 to 30 days), four were workers working on maintenance and maintenance work on the roads, and they lost their lives on a vehicle running through the section of works open to traffic, according to statistics, while the vehicle was running with an excessive speed compared to the specific limit marked for that section, or because of a distraction from the driver.
No person should lose their life in the performance of their job. This control and surveillance campaign will contribute to reducing the risks inherent to the human factor, excesses of speed in these sections, inadequate lane changes and distractions.
