The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, through the Spanish Agricultural Guarantee Fund (FEGA) 14.752, has initiated the second and final phase of the “2023 Food Aid Program for the Most Disadvantaged People”, in which the distribution of about 36 million kilos of food is planned. This amount represents 71% of the total to be distributed in the 2023 program, since the other 29% was delivered in the month of April.
With regard to the data of La Rioja, the amount of food distributed is 294,891 kilos for a total of 14,752 final beneficiaries in the autonomous community.
The food purchased is basic in nature, not perishable, easy to transport and storage. In this way, the basket includes rice, cooked chickpeas, cooked beans, canned tuna, sardine canned, meat canned (lean), alimentary paste (spaghetti and noodles), fried tomato, biscuits, vegetable mackerel, canned fruit, soluble cocoa and childish fruit and chicken tarrites.
These products are delivered to all Spanish provinces through the food banks and provincial Red Cross centers, which will distribute it to some 5,200 partner delivery organizations. The final beneficiaries of the aid are approximately 1.3 million people who will be able to easily prepare a full meal for a person or family, including babies.
The purchase of the food has been carried out by the EAGGF through a public tender process worth 88,571,420 million euros (VAT not included). The program is funded this year in its entirety by the OBJECTIVE-EU recovery and resilience fund, which has been used to increase support for the European Fund for the Most Disadvantaged People (FEAD), in order to address the situation of those who have been affected socially and economically, by the COVID-19 crisis.
The year 2023 is the last year in which the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food participates in the implementation of the plans of the food aid program for the most disadvantaged people of the European Union, in which it participates since 1987 without interruption.
From 2024, the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy, and the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030, will be the competent ministries to articulate this model of aid in Spain.
