At least four of them would be people of sub-Saharan origin and three others, of Maghreb origin.
The State Security Forces and Corps have reported the rescue of 15 dead bodies on the coast of Balears since January
The State Security Forces and Corps have notified the Government Delegation that, so far in 2025, they have been rescued from the sea, at different points on the coast of Balears, a total of 15 bodies without life that could be related to shipwrecks of pateras. At least four of them would be people of sub-Saharan origin and three others, individuals of Maghreb origin. In all cases, investigations to determine identity and other filiation data remain open and under judicial guardianship, although it has been determined that at least three of the recovered remains would belong to women.
In total, the Civil Guard and the National Police have reported a fortnight of operations related to this type of finding, since last January, the same period in which they report having received various communications from relatives in Algeria of people who had sailed from this country on board precarious boats, which led the Civil Guard to carry out tracing work in search of possible missing persons in the Balearic Sea.
The government delegate to the Balearic Islands, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, has stressed that the discovery of these lifeless bodies allegedly belonging to boat occupants “highlights the vital tragedy of those who, despite the great danger and the harshness of this crossing, decide to undertake it while still endangering their lives”. Rodríguez Badal highlights “the intense and essential work of the emergency services and the Security Forces to recover the bodies and investigate their identity”; “unfortunately, once we face the reality of someone who has lost his life, the most important thing is to know who he is and be able to communicate it to his relatives, who suffer from the lack of news of their loved one”, he adds.
