Rodríguez Badal calls on the Balearic Government to support the Government’s initiative to manage the distribution of children to other communities
The government delegate, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, has called on the Balearic Government to support the reform of the Aliens Act, so that the Government of Spain can meet the request of the president, Margalida Prohens, and assume the management of the distribution of migrant minors from the communities where the arrival of these surpasses the capacity of the system to other non-stressed regions, and thus guarantee a dignified reception to these people. Currently, the competence of minors is transferred to the autonomies and, in the case of Balears, it is managed by the Island Consells.
The proposal registered last July in the Congress of Deputies proposed the modification of article 35 of the Law on Foreigners, in order to establish the mandatory reception of minors in other communities when a region exceeds 150% of its reception capacity. In this way, a binding criterion is introduced so that unaccompanied migrant minors who arrive in frontier territories of migration in Spain are distributed among the different autonomous communities in which the incidence of this phenomenon is much lower or non-existent.
Structural solution
The delegate stressed that the petition that the president of the Balearic Government has made public in recent hours, “is, in short, the proposal of the Government of Spain, that its party, the PP, has been blocking for seven months and that offers a structural solution to the situation of these minors”, so he urges the leaders of the Autonomous Executive to enforce this criterion and contribute to the approval of the legislative reform that will make it possible. Rodríguez Badal recalls that “although the competition is autonomous, the Government has always maintained its commitment and has put a proposal on the table”.
