- The subdelegate of the Government highlighted the coordination between all the agents involved and the collaboration of the municipalities
- More than 98% of the territory of Lugo will remain within the band of totality, which places the province as one of the main points of observation of the phenomenon in Galicia
The subdelegate of the Government in Lugo, Olimpia López, presided this morning in the Subdelegation of the Government the previous coordination meeting of the General Administration of the State (AGE) in the province before the total eclipse scheduled for August 12, an exceptional astronomical phenomenon that will have a great scientific, tourist and social interest.
The subdelegate stressed the importance of the organization and coordination between administrations “in the face of an event that has not occurred in the Iberian Peninsula for more than 120 years and that places the province of Lugo as one of the privileged places for its observation”. Ensuring security, he continued, “is essential to promote the best possible experience for citizens.”
The meeting brought together representatives of the agencies of the General Administration of the State involved in the preparation of the operation, including the Civil Guard and Traffic Subsector, the National Police, Civil Protection, Maritime Captaincy, the Provincial Traffic Headquarters and the Provincial Telecommunications Inspectorate, as well as representatives of Emergencies of the Xunta de Galicia and the Diputació de Lugo, with the aim of initiating the planning of the device that will guarantee security, mobility and the correct organization of this day.
During the meeting, the current situation of the observation points authorized in the province was analyzed, as well as the access to them and the forecast of displacement of people. In addition, the importance of disseminating scientific recommendations for a safe observation of the phenomenon was recalled. In this regard, Olimpia López wanted to insist on the essential use of certified glasses to avoid eye damage.
In recent months, the Government’s deputy delegate in Lugo held meetings with the mayors of the municipalities of the province, “as administrations closer to the territory and who better know the spaces, accesses and possible points of concentration of people.”
In these meetings, the main recommendations of security and mobility that must be transferred to the citizens were addressed. Among them, it highlights the convenience of planning trips in advance and avoiding travel on the same day of the event, due to the forecast of high traffic intensity. Likewise, the need to extreme caution in driving was emphasized, especially because of the sudden darkness that will cause the phenomenon.
It was also recommended to promote the download of the AlertCops application, which allows incidents to be reported quickly to security forces and bodies.
Data from the observation
According to data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN), 56.3% of the Galician territory will be able to observe the total eclipse, a percentage that exceeds 98% in the province of Lugo, which makes this territory one of the main points of visualization of the phenomenon. In fact, almost all of the municipalities will remain within the range of totality.
In addition, the duration of the total eclipse phase will vary according to the observation point and will range between 9 seconds and the minute and 49 seconds in the area of the Lugo Marina, one of the areas in which the phenomenon can be observed for longer.
