The Government Delegation in Galicia reports that the DGT closed the alcohol and drug campaign in Galicia with 31,139 tests carried out and 928 positive tests on one of the two substances.
The campaign was carried out between 14 and 20 July by the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard throughout Galicia. Nationwide, the agents tested 210,957 drivers for alcohol and/or drugs, of which 4,234 tested positive.
This last figure means that more than 600 drivers were detected every day at the wheel after consuming alcohol and/or drugs, the vast majority of them (96%) after a preventive control and the rest for infractions, accidents or for presenting symptoms.
It is essential to remember that preventive controls are essential to identify drivers who drive after consuming alcohol or drugs, putting at risk their own safety and that of others. At the provincial level, 12,531 tests were carried out in A Coruña (12,138 alcohol and 393 drugs), 7,493 in Lugo (7,297 alcohol and 196 drugs), 6,617 in Ourense (6,456 alcohol and 161 drugs) and 4,498 in Pontevedra (4,417 alcohol and 81 drugs). At the end of this note is a summary table of this data, which also includes the number of intercepted conductors and conductors.
These campaigns not only detect those who break the law, but also alert and raise awareness among drivers who, even if they do not exceed the permitted limit, use their vehicle after drinking alcohol. In this campaign, with data recorded throughout Spain, 4,407 drivers were detected with rates below the legal limit. Of these, 4,130 were identified in preventive controls, 229 after committing an offence, 46 for being involved in an accident and 2 for presenting symptoms of having consumed.
The Ministry of the Interior recalls that only 0 has 0 consequences because, even with lower rates than allowed, the risk of an accident is greater.
Alcohol remains the second most common factor in fatal accidents, being present in 29% of them.
Police coordination
As in other campaigns, the collaboration of local and regional police was crucial. The alcohol and drug checks were carried out on both interurban and urban roads, and the data of these police officers are still being processed, so they will be added later.
Even if the campaign ends, Civil Guard agents will continue to carry out alcohol and drug checks at any time and on any road to dissuade drivers from getting behind the wheel under the effects of these substances, especially in these coming days with the celebration of popular festivities in tropic municipalities of our geography.
