The subdelegate of the Government in Ourense, Eladio Santos, today encouraged the citizens to enjoy the 63rd edition of the Octopus Festival of O Carballiño "with responsibility". He did so during the Xunta Local de Seguridad that he co-chaired this morning with the acting mayor, José Rafael Castro Gil.
The meeting, which brought together the common Local Security Board and the specific one of the Octopus Festival, was attended by the territorial director of the Presidency, Justice and Sports, Beatriz Fernández; the lieutenant colonel head of the Ourense Civil Guard Command, Rafael Berguillo; the councillor for Security of O Carballiño, Alberto Otero; the councillor for Tourism, José Manuel Dacal; agents of the Civil Guard and the Local Police; firefighters; members of the Red Cross, members of the Civil Municipality and Axega.
Eladio Santos coordinated the operation to guarantee "maximum security" in the festival of international tourist interest, dedicated this year the Ninety Padovana and which celebrates its big day on August 10, with traditional food in the Municipal Park. That device will be composed of 29 civil guards (4 of Traffic), 15 local police and at least four agents of the Autonomous Police, together with Civil Protection, two technicians of AXEGA and a sanitary device.
On the other hand, the Xunta Local Common Security addressed the crime statistics of the Civil Guard in El Carballiño, which reveal a clear decrease in the crimes committed, since in 2024 there was a decrease of 14% compared to the previous year and the decrease continued in the first half of 2025. "The joint work and collaboration of the Local Police and the Civil Guard translates into a drop in crime that consolidates the municipality as a safe place," said Santos.
Gender violence
With respect to the report of gender violence, in Carballiño there are 30 active cases, 3 more than in last year’s Xunta Local de Seguridad. Most of them have judicial measures of removal and prohibition of communication. "We need the involvement of the whole society and all institutions to end the scourge of violence against women," said the deputy delegate, who recalled that the number 016 is the disposition of all victims 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Master plan
The Master Plan for the coexistence and improvement of security in educational centers and their environments was also addressed, within the framework of which the Civil Guard gave 30 talks during the 2024/25 academic year in the different educational centers of O Carballiño. The topics addressed were data protection, harassment and cyberbullying, gender violence, road safety and additions. A total of 690 students and 30 teachers attended. In addition, the Civil Guard stressed that 232 fathers and mothers of the CEIP Calvo Sotelo also attended the various talks. The subdelegate congratulated the agents for getting to the families, "a fundamental fact to make known the dangers faced by minors and to be able to prevent problems."
