The Government’s deputy delegate in A Coruña, María Rivas, said in Boiro that the Government is continuing to work to bring 5G closer to the entire population of the province of A Coruña, deepening its commitment to the rural environment through the different actions contemplated in the UNICO Broadband Program. This plan benefits the province from 2021 with its successive editions until 2024, as well as the different parishes of Boiro. It does so through the awarding company Rede Aberta, which has the investment of the Ministry for Digital Transition and the Public Service. The deputy delegate, together with the mayor of Boiro, José Ramón Romero, and the head of the awarding company, Óscar Barreiro Casal, analyzed in detail the impact of this plan for citizenship in this city.
María Rivas stressed that the Government, through aid such as this, is committed to a living rural with a future, analyzing the shortcomings of rural Coruñés and resolving them. “We are looking for small municipalities to attract population, and to achieve that goal we work with actions like this, with the focus on not leaving anyone behind and advancing a more just society adapted to progress,” he said.
The subdelegate stressed the progress of the UNICO Program in Boiro, where 914 families and companies already have the highest speed connection. “This is a detailed work, which is now being carried out with cadastral reference to cadastral reference, and thanks to this effort and perseverance will bring great benefits to the citizenship of this city,” said María Rivas, who analyzed at the meeting the degree of implementation of the different broadband extension programs.
In this regard, the subdelegate took the opportunity to remind the population that they can request their access to the Internet through satellite systems, enabled in areas where the connection does not arrive in another way and that guarantee a reliable and secure connection to the network. “This service, which is part of the UNICO Program, guarantees territorial cohesion through the funds of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Government,” said María Rivas, who took the opportunity to highlight the work of the field from city to city, with which the shortcomings are detected to guarantee a precise action of the different administrations.
Through an action begun in 2021, in the province of A Coruña there are 71,300 families and companies with access to the highest speed internet in rural areas. These figures are the result of an investment of more than 22.3 million euros from the Government through the Recovery Plan, which is complemented by another 16 million provided by the installation companies. In total, the Government has allocated 134 million euros to Galician digitalization, making it progress and eliminating any technological gap in the territory.
Program UNICO 5G Active Networks
El programa UNICO 5G Redes Activas es una iniciativa pionera en Europa. It allocates funds from the Recovery Plan to finance active equipment and the construction of towers that expand the deployment of 5G with full functionality in small municipalities. The goal is to provide 5G coverage to locations where there is no 4G mobile coverage of at least 50 Mbps downstream, and where it is not expected to exist in the next three years.
