The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, highlighted the progress of the government in the modernization of procedures and public services with the implementation of the new digital ID. Pedro Blanco encouraged all Galician citizens to benefit from this new service offered by the Ministry of the Interior through the National Police, available with the new mobile application MiDNI, accompanied by the superior head of the Police of Galicia, Pedro Pacheco.
Pedro Blanco supervised in the A Coruña Police Station the new Police tool implemented by the Ministry of the Interior and took the opportunity to activate his own digital document on the mobile phone. “We are at the forefront of technology offering citizens the possibility of having the document in digital format with all the guarantees of security,” said the delegate, who said that the application is “very simple, intuitive and effective, fully meeting the expectations that the Ministry of the Interior had when putting it into operation.”
With the new application, which is free and free, any citizen will be able to prove their identity just as they would with a physical ID. This is achieved by generating a QR code signed and stamped by the Police that guarantees the authenticity of the data shown in real time and certifies that they are updated and valid. In this way, any digital user will be able to make procedures as everyday as voting in an election, signing a banking procedure or collecting a package at a post office.
For the moment, with the ID on the mobile phone, it will be possible to accredit the identity in person, but it will not be used to do it through the Internet, to use it as an electronic travel document for border crossing, to accredit the identity in other countries or to carry out telematic authentication and/or electronic signature procedures.
That is why the Ministry of the Interior is preparing a second phase of the project by 2026, which will allow the accreditation of identity for telematics, electronic signature and other operations through the Internet.
How to Get Digital ID
To have the digital ID it is necessary to complete three phases: a prior registration that unequivocally links the identity of the citizen to a mobile phone number that allows the download of the MiID application, the virtualization of the ID and the verification of the process.
To perform the registration it is necessary that the DNI is in force and its electronic certificates, assets. It can be done through the web www.midni.gob.es, in any of the Documentation Update Posts (PAD) existing in police stations or concellos and in any of the 290 Documentation Units of the National Police. In any of these registration channels, the citizen will be informed of the way of access to the application for download.
During the registration, it is verified that the DNI is associated with that telephone number by means of single-use codes that the user must use to end the correct binding. Only a DNI can be associated with a mobile phone number.
After registering and downloading the application it will be possible to virtualize the DNI. MiDNI does not guard the identity data of the citizen, but through it the DNI management unit is consulted in real time. In case the document is lost or stolen, the information will not be available.
When making the query, the ID holder will be able to decide what data he wants to show depending on the use he wants to give and the purpose of identity verification. This freedom to show the data second the situation increases the privacy of the citizen, since it is not necessary to show all the data in all situations.
The three options available are:
- DNI AGE, which will show the photograph, name and age of majority.
- DNI SIMPLE, which will reflect the photograph, the name, surnames, sex and validity of DNI.
- FULL DNI, which shows all the data of the physical document.
Once the requested level of information has been chosen, the application generates a QR code that is displayed on the screen of the phone of the DNI holder.
It is a code generated by the police, which ensures that the data is authentic at the same time, which will remain visible for a short period of time to facilitate verification. After this period, it will lose its validity and it will be necessary to generate a new code.
The generated QR code can be scanned by any other device on which the MiDNI application was installed. In doing so, citizen data will appear on the verifier user’s screen depending on the chosen option. This data will remain for a short period of time to allow verification and will not be stored on the verifier’s phone.
