The Government Delegation in Galicia informs that the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) will start tomorrow, Monday, April 7, a speed control campaign that will especially affect conventional roads (those that have only one lane in each direction) and the urban roads of the Galician community. This initiative, which is part of the DGT’s annual programming, aims to achieve a greater reduction in average speed and will be maintained throughout the week, until Sunday 13.
The campaign will be coordinated by the provincial traffic headquarters and will use the maximum possible means, with the notification, when possible, of the existence of controls through the variable signage panels and on the alphanumeric screens of the vehicles of the Traffic Group located in the vicinity.
In addition, in these controls the DGT will have the support of the different local police of the municipalities in its field of action, a very important collaboration to unify the message of respect to the limits of speed established regardless of the route through which it is circulated.
The controls shall ensure compliance with the generic and specific limits for speed, speed in overtaking and distances between vehicles. In this regard, it should be remembered that, in March 2022, it entered into force a rule that prevents drivers from passing the speed at 20km/h to advance on conventional roads.
In fact, in 2024, a total of 39,168 driving people lost 95,388 driving licence points in Galicia due to the commission of 40,588 serious overspeed offences. Of this total, 1,267 people committed the sanctions that involve 6 extraction points, the most serious.
The campaign that starts tomorrow seeks to make drivers aware of the close relationship between inadequate speed and accidents. The difference between the incompatibility between alcohol and driving or the use of the safety belt and helmet, which are not questioned, the consideration of speed as a risk factor does not have the same level of acceptance among drivers, despite the fact that excessive speed is one of the most frequent concurrent causes of fatal traffic accidents in Galicia.
Last year's special campaign
During the seven days of the surveillance and speed control campaign launched by the General Directorate of Traffic between 15 and 21 April 2024, the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard controlled the speed of 155,363 vehicles in Galicia. Of the total number of vehicles controlled, 9,557 people were found to be offending and therefore reported as having been overspeeding.
